Neighbour displaying an England flag felt like a nice sign of integration

I noticed something today that made me smile.

Our neighbours moved here from another country a while ago. From briefly chatting with them it's clear they're still learning English and settling into life here - its clear they have come from a very different culture and people could quickly make wrong assumptions about them.

Today I noticed they had an England flag displayed in their window. It just struck me as a really nice gesture. To me, it felt like they were embracing the country they've chosen to make their home, to integrate their kids into our culture and I found that genuinely heartwarming.

England have just been knocked out of the world cup and they put a flag up? Seems like they are being sarcastic.

yes i think you'll find they're actually taking the piss. What country are they from? I'd be tempted to do the same back to them lol.

Haha - they are definitely not embracing the country, they are laughing.

Maybe the flag was up before today. What a negative outlook. They are trying to fit in and this is the response they get.

Do you mean yesterday? Or are they from Argentina?

Notsodisney · 16/07/2026 12:30

Warning to me to never display flags so no one can fawn over me

Why would they put an England flag up "to take the piss". You'd put an Argentinian flag up surely.

Good for you, that their gesture warmed your cockles.
