Northern Soul dancing - can you learn?

So I am mid fifties and have always loved watching Northern Soul dancing. It just feels really cool.

Id Love to be able to dance like this but despite me trying my in the kitchen at home I have the rhythm of a baby elephant.

Is this something you can learn and how? I’m not up for clubbing - would prefer home xx

Obviously goes without saying that I hope your friend recovered (ankles can be notoriously pesky to heal as both dc and I are finding out) but i really did laugh at this calamity!

Yeah Levana’s ok but none of the young ones these days are a patch on the old uns that went to Wigan. To be be honest I don’t think it is really something you learn, it’s more instinctive. Just go to a few events and give it go. Follow what others do and enjoy the music.

I love a bit of Northern Soul. I was 16 in 1974 and just slightly too young to be allowed to go to the Wigan casino.

I don’t really get northern soul dancing, it doesn’t look like dancing to me, it looks like someone’s taken a load of drugs and have just got the jitters without any rhythm. I certainly don’t see it as something to want to learn - CAN you even learn it? Whenever I’ve seen it before it doesn’t look like clear dance moves, just some awkward steps!

I was on a cruise where we were joined by a 200 strong party of Soulies (25% of the passengers). Great music and dancing but they partied HARD.

Just had a look and I think it was this event but don't know if it's this video you saw, i remember adults dancing too. Still lovely though

That’s what would terrify me about dancing to it - I need structure and would be far too self conscious and not know what to do with myself 😄

It looks fun to do.
I go line dancing, similarly cringey but it's absolutely joyful to do.
