Which side should the hinges go on for this gate?

Which side - on this diagram - do the hinges need to attach? This is the back of the gate.

Depends where it's opening into/out of. Forget the gate and look at the location.

Sorry, should have said battens are installed on either side and both sides are symmetrical (batten then wall on both) so that’s not an issue. Opening into an alleyway.

There probably isn't a right way. Hinges can probably go either side. First, I'd think about where there is space to put the type of catch you want at the height you want it, and which side of the gate is prettier!

I’d put them on the left as you look at it, all things being equal. But it really depends on what way you want it to open.

There is a correct way. As the diagram is shown the hinges need to go on the right hand side, so the diagonal braces are supporting the weight of the gate. If you put the hinges on the left the gate will droop over time.

The problem is I’m told there is a ‘right’ way and it’s to do with where the hinges meet the bottom of the brace - but that can’t be on both sides so trying to work out which of the two braces it applies to, iyswim.

That’s a good point. Where will it latch) do you want a cabin hook to occasionally hold it open? Think that through too.

You can simply Google this question and see numerous sites where the construction of a gate is explained and to understand the reason for the bracing and the need for the gate to be installed the correct way.
In this case, the hinges would go on the RH side so the brace(s) channel the load down to where there is support.

This is correct- the diagonal braces take the load of the horizontal beams, and transfer that load to the upright that is hinged. If it isn’t hinged, then the weight of the gate will be hanging on the unsupported side, and the timber will warp over time (infact probably quite quickly).

If one side is a brick wall and the other is a post, attach to the wall (for example).

I did Google but have seen conflicting information and not many examples of this brace, so thought I’d ask for real world experiences as MN doesn’t let me down. Thank you for the explanation of where and why.
