Neighbour demanded proof of our hosepipe ban exemption

HoseBan · Today 16:35

My NDN has just demanded to see proof that we are exempt from the local hose pipe ban !!!!

I have said to them I won’t be showing them anything as it’s private but they can report me if I want and the water company can check.

We literally have just been filling a small paddling pool daily for the dc for after school and today have a little sprinkler toy as it’s boiling.

I know some people aren’t aware that there are exemptions (eg being on priority services register or certain tariff) but I’m so shocked they demanded proof !!!

We are on the priority services register and our hosepipe ban started at 1.01am this morning.

It said in the email that only the person who the priority service applies to is the only one who is exempt from the hosepipe ban - everyone else in the household is not allowed to use a hosepipe, my child cannot use a hosepipe so we are using watering cans.

It also says that it is for watering plants etc not for sprinklers and filling paddling pools.

I tip the water on the plants afterwards

Depends on the reason for exemption surely. I.e someone with a disability that affects their ability to regulate temperature, a cold pool would help.

They could have a cold bath?

It doesn't sit right with me that a disabled persons kids can have a paddling pool out but an able bodied persons kids have to go without. That makes no sense whatsoever and I say that as a disabled person.

Because an able bodied person would find it easier to fill the paddling pool up with a watering can

PinkSparklyPussyCat · Today 18:58

The hosepipe ban doesn't start until 17th here so I'll be making sure my garden is well watered this week. After that I'll be using watering cans but I'll be filling them from the hose so it all seems a bit pointless!

justasking111 · Today 18:59

I'm off to buy some water board shares. Like taking candy from a baby 😁

I’d have given that neighbour the middle finger and told them to go and swim in one the rivers that our water companies have filled with sewage. Honestly are people really that fucking stupid that they want to have a pop at their neighbours for the water companies greed and incompetence??! I bet the silly twat votes Reform.

What a genuinely bizarre comment

its more pointing out the hypocrisy of the water companies

How do they know you have a serious health condition? Do you just continue to use the hose because you have it or are they informed somehow?

I was inexplicably added to loads of priority services during the pandemic (e.g. supermarket slots). I don't know how. I think the hospital might have released names.

Surely depends on the disability

pimplebum · Today 19:03

Why do you think it's ok to ask?

this is an anonymous forum and therefore the very place to ask things that we don't in real life - literally the very point of this forum

i would also like to know as i assume its ASD related and i have priority tariff - great news for me and my paddling pool kids 👍😁

Bourneyesterday · Today 19:05

😮 Wouldn't be filling a paddling pool during a water shortage

LoafofSellotape · Today 19:08

sittingonabeach · Today 19:02

Yes of course, but if you've registered as a priority customer then presumably you would find it hard to use a can.

LittleBearPad · Today 19:11

I’m interested to know if all the horror struck posters who wouldn’t consider having a paddling pool have small children?

I doubt I’d empty and refill a paddling pool daily, I’d likely get cleaning tablets, but they aren’t a completely unreasonable thing to have in this weather.

There isn't a shortage though.

sittingonabeach · Today 19:12

@LoafofSellotape but the priority service isn’t limited to disabilities impacting your ability to use a watering can

Marieb19 · Today 19:13

Why don't you just fill it with buckets or watering can? If seems that you are abusing an allowance designed for one of your family members, not for you.

justasking111 · Today 19:13

Interesting that the salary of two CEOs have been capped for environmental reasons. Pollution.

Where? Certain areas near us have been asked to limit water usage to essential use only. Paddling pool either filled by bucket or hosepipe probably doesn’t fit essential use for most families

Theworldsgonemadagain · Today 19:15

Yanbu. Hose pipe bans are a complete joke. It rains most of the year, we live next to the sea. The water companies continually have leaky pipes and leak sewage into the sea. We don't get hose pipes in my area ever but if they did I wouldn't comply. Fucking joke.

SurreySenMum26 · Today 19:15

RoseOliviaAu · Today 16:48

Blue Badge holders are exempt from hosepipe bans primarily to ensure health and safety. Mobility issues can make manual watering or washing physically difficult or impossible, and carrying heavy watering cans poses significant risks.

While in the letter of the law you’re able to use the sprinkler for playing… I’m not sure it’s in the spirit.

I didn't know this. But it's my 14 year old sons blue badge but he would never water the garden. So I don't think it's much help to us. Who knew? How do people become aware of this?

Sigh. You check with your water supplier.

I just googled. I have a blue badge there's a lot of extras it's not just for the car.

DozyCrow · Today 19:22

Some people might consider laying new turf to be unnecessary…

Well fortunately for me we don’t have a hosepipe ban in my area.

SurreySenMum26 · Today 19:23

godmum56 · Today 19:16

But genuinely why would I? Wouldn't it be easier for them to tell us everything that is covered by priority service? Like our power supplier didn't wait for us to ask if we could have a power bank. They just delivered it? My child is disabled. I honestly don't have time to look up every single concession that he is entitled to and this is a random one. My pressing concerns are getting water bottles when its cut off. Even then they have never turned up. Filling a paddling pool is pretty low on my list of things to research

touchyfeely · Today 19:23

I'm amazed at people complaining about a couple of kids with medical needs having a little paddling pool - people are so ridiculous they're even suggesting they have a cold bath instead - I mean the water goes in the pool and also waters the plants or it goes in the bath and goes down the plug hole, how on earth is that better?

Be fucked off at the water companies taking the absolute piss. Southern water had a profit of 138 million last year, but this lady can't fill a little paddling pool when it gets really hot for her disabled kids. Blame the shitty water companies for not bothering to fix leaks - we had one in the road for months that they blamed on run off from the hills. They came out 4 times before they found that is was actually a leak.

Blame the water companies for not bothering to build any new reservoirs - do you know the last time a reservoir was built? Fucking 1992, 34 years ago. The UK population has gone up by about 11 MILLION since then.

Stop being annoyed by this lady and start getting annoyed at the right people - the shitty water company fat cats syphoning all the money off to line their pockets.
