Neighbour demanded proof of our hosepipe ban exemption

HoseBan · Today 16:35

My NDN has just demanded to see proof that we are exempt from the local hose pipe ban !!!!

I have said to them I won’t be showing them anything as it’s private but they can report me if I want and the water company can check.

We literally have just been filling a small paddling pool daily for the dc for after school and today have a little sprinkler toy as it’s boiling.

I know some people aren’t aware that there are exemptions (eg being on priority services register or certain tariff) but I’m so shocked they demanded proof !!!

Why do you think it's ok to ask?

I’d love to know. I have a disabled child who is distressed by the heat, would I be exempt? I’ve never heard of an exemption from a hosepipe ban before.

I'm on the priority services register and didn't think being on the register in itself gives you exemption, I thought there was more to it.
However I've just looked at Anglian Water and it seems it does.

Priority Service Register (PSR) customers
If you're unable to make reasonable adjustments because of a health condition, disability or additional support need, you may be covered by an exception.

This may apply if you are registered, or would like to register, for our Priority Services Register and have:

  • A serious or long-term health condition
  • Dementia
  • A developmental condition
  • Dialysis treatment
  • A physical impairment
  • Restricted hand movement
  • A visual impairment
  • A temporary condition following a hospital stay
  • Additional support needs that make it difficult to make reasonable adjustments

If any of the above apply to you, you are automatically exempt. You do not need to apply for this or to let us know.

I've not been using my hosepipe to water tubs which is a pain because I can't lift a full watering can. I only use it for watering a few tubs and baskets.

How do they know you have a serious health condition? Do you just continue to use the hose because you have it or are they informed somehow?

wizzywig · Today 17:10

Thank you for sharing info about exemptions. I never knew this.

Sherararara · Today 17:10

Your exemption isn’t so you can fill your kids paddling pool.

While you may be exempt, filling a paddling pool every day and using a sprinkler toy is taking the piss.

This.

Anewuser · Today 17:11

My husband and I were talking about this, this morning.

Our household is exempt as on PSR.

Apparently, there has never ever been a fine made for people using a hosepipe during a ban. The fine would be raised locally but funds would go to the government so water companies can’t be arsed to enforce it.

tinyspiny · Today 17:12

I don’t care who uses a hosepipe , we won’t be but I do think using a sprinkler , be it a toy or a lawn watering device is taking the piss .

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · Today 17:12

Mumdiva99 · Today 16:51

The exemption is not to allow you to fill the paddling pool and use a sprinkler. As others have said it's so you can carry out necessary tasks. Paddling pool is not necessary.

THIS

NeverDropYourMooncup · Today 17:12

Oooh, thanks, just registered with my water company.

Somewhat irritated that despite being d/Deaf or hard of hearing, the one mandatory field is a telephone number, but nobody's thought that one through (not everybody uses mobiles or relay).

Coconutter24 · Today 17:14

Regardless of if you are exempt or not, filling a paddling pool isn’t really what you are exempt from using the hosepipe for.

HauntedBungalow · Today 17:14

I'd rather question the water companies about why they're pumping literal actual shit into our rivers and issuing hosepipe bans instead of fixing all the leaks pishing out water across the country every day. Your neighbour is weird.

Can’t you sit them in a cool bath?

Viviennemary · Today 17:17

Why would somebody be exempt from a hosepipe ban. In any case if you're on a meter you would just pay for the extra water surely.

Excellent. That's really good to know.

elliejjtiny · Today 17:18

We are exempt as my youngest is disabled. We use it to fill the paddling pool as he can't go swimming.

Betadelta · Today 17:18

OP I think you are being cheeky to fill the paddling pool even if you have an exemption.

CalmWriter · Today 17:18

Coconutter24 · Today 17:16

Of course and I do. But if there’s a way my child can play outside with his sibling and experience new sensory experiences without us getting fined, I’d love to know about it.

superspideysense · Today 17:19

metalstrawsarecoldbutnotsoggy · Today 16:57

I think if you’re able bodied you can fill up buckets and put them in the paddling pool but a disabled person (disability dependent) can’t do this. That’s why they’re allowed to use the hose.

But for the same water it seems silly. The bucket user surely will just use the hose as it’s the same amount of water so nobody (regardless of disability) is actually saving any water!

but as other have said - it’s all silly anyway as the water companies pump rubbish into our water/the sea and continually refuse to fix leaks

Dunnocantthinkofone · Today 17:21

essential use of a paddling pool and sprinkler toy eh? Daily?
That’s taking the utter piss and you know it

Why don’t you get a small paddling pool and carry buckets of water to fill the pool?

GardenCovent · Today 17:23

I think what you said to your ndn was fine.
I would like to know as well why you are exempt, again I’m being nosey but you were the one that brought it up. As pp have said filling a paddling pool does seem to be taking the piss?

Given it would appear no one has ever been fined, I’d crack on.

MissyB1 · Today 17:24

I’d have given that neighbour the middle finger and told them to go and swim in one the rivers that our water companies have filled with sewage. Honestly are people really that fucking stupid that they want to have a pop at their neighbours for the water companies greed and incompetence??! I bet the silly twat votes Reform.
