Neighbour demanded proof of our hosepipe ban exemption

HoseBan · Today 16:35

My NDN has just demanded to see proof that we are exempt from the local hose pipe ban !!!!

I have said to them I won’t be showing them anything as it’s private but they can report me if I want and the water company can check.

We literally have just been filling a small paddling pool daily for the dc for after school and today have a little sprinkler toy as it’s boiling.

I know some people aren’t aware that there are exemptions (eg being on priority services register or certain tariff) but I’m so shocked they demanded proof !!!

Why do you think it's ok to ask?

It's ok to ask. I didn't realise households could be exempt so I'm also curious to know. Is it a secret? This forum is anonymous.

SerendipityJane · Today 17:03

It's a shame they didn't put 1% of that effort in to writing to the water company asking "Why are you pumping shit into our rivers", really.

Absolutely ! 🙂

Sirzy · Today 20:50

I live in a house with two blue badge holders (one of whom has a Mickey button) but I still think your pushing the limits of the reasons for the exceptions

Anto2024 · Today 20:50

HoseBan · Today 20:46

As I said previously it needs to be clean water. One of my dc has a feeding button so we can’t let bacteria get into it hence needing clean water each time

We have a swim spa and have bromine granules and pucks for that. Maybe you can sanitise the water with a water cleaning agent like that, and cover the pool between uses to avoid contaminants getting in.

Wouldn’t it be safer not to use a paddling pool at all?

It’s perfectly safe as long as the pool and water are clean

But don’t you see why your neighbour might be upset?

I'd still say check your suppliers acyual website. I have seen a couple of things on there which I know to be innaccurate but don't want to identify where I live.

FrenchBunionSoup · Today 20:59

HoseBan · Today 20:45

Would they allow the use of a hosepipe to water the plants then? If so I’m just adding a step by putting the water in a paddling pool
for a few hours then using it to water the plants

Doesn't it take a lot more water to fill the paddling pool than would be used to water those plants with a watering can or a quick spray with the hose? If so, it's not really equivalent.

LoafofSellotape · Today 21:00

sittingonabeach · Today 19:12

@LoafofSellotape but the priority service isn’t limited to disabilities impacting your ability to use a watering can

Well, if its not then you can crack on with a watering can then.

dnadiscoveryquery · Today 21:03

superspideysense · Today 20:27

But you don’t need a hosepipe for those. So although you’re on the par, not exempt from the hosepipe ban.

Tbh I hadn’t looked into that as we don’t really get them where I am in Wales. I was just commenting that not everyone on the priority register is disabled.

it depends on the water authority (is anyone else bored with my saying that?)

Sorry I think that was my lazy typing.

the poster had said she’s on the PSR due to needing clean water for making up meds. Which of course makes sense. BUT you don't need a hosepipe for this. You use the taps in your house. Therefore the element of the hosepipe ban (if she has one in her area 😉) exemption won’t apply.

sort of losing the plot on this thread now. Lucky I don’t have a ban so might go and cool off 😂

I think what people are getting at is that a daily paddling pool is not essential.

farmers using water to water the crops to feed us all is essential.

Mintine · Today 21:07

ofcolitas · Today 16:49

It doesn't sit right with me that a disabled persons kids can have a paddling pool out but an able bodied persons kids have to go without. That makes no sense whatsoever and I say that as a disabled person.

Exactly this

EnglishRain · Today 21:08

I expect people may think I’m taking the piss - I’ve applied to go on PSR in the hope I can be exempt and use the hose to water the plants (vegetables and salad included) a little every few days. I’ve got major surgery shortly and have been told I can’t lift or carry anything heavy for at least 6-8 weeks. Won’t be able to lug a watering can (which is troublesome as is, and I can’t do as much as I need to due to health condition I am having surgery for).

that's my point. Some suppliers pick out just this or that bit and exempt it, some suppliers give you all the exemptions and trust you to only use what you need.

"Perhaps just be mindful of the ban OP, and the very important reasons why it is in place."
You do realise that it's rained, Up North this week? This is a gathering and management issue and people should just be telling the water companies tgtf.

Part of the problem, from what I’ve read, is that the water companies aren’t able to treat the water quick enough to meet current, increased, demand. We all need to be sensible so that we have access to water for drinking and basic washing needs. I will be abiding by the hosepipe ban, and I’ve told my teens to try to cut down on shower times. It’s not about trying to find spurious ways around the rules; it’s about making sure the population as a whole can have access to clean water for basic needs.

justasking111 · Today 21:26

Anto2024 · Today 20:44

Looking at the profits taken by these companies and the fact that huge amounts of water get wasted from leaks (19% of all water put into public supply, apparently) we definitely need to be holding the water companies to task before ripping each other apart over a few buckets.

Companies house is interesting. I only had a quick glance but eyebrows were raised.

Gemilo · Today 21:32

Sounds like you are taking the mick to be honest. Filling the pool every day! I’m sure all kids would like to self regulate in a paddling pool.

itsgettingweird · Today 21:33

My DS is excempt.

We don’t live in banned area anyway.

A family member cancelled filling their pool for a family BBQ today because of it as they are in a banned area.

DS did offer to go and fill it for them and get in 🤣🤣 (obviously didn’t as no need to (plus he was joking!) before anyone jumps on us!)

I think there needs to be greater established rules around why you are priority and of the hosepipe ban being lifted for you is necessary.

My ds needs access to go water because he has a muscular condition. He doesn’t need a hosepipe to fill a paddling pool or use a sprinkler or water the garden!
