I only watch streaming these days. DH likes to flick around programmes to watch things still. We’ve been using a very old sky box to do this but it seems to have given up.
do they all give you the same selection of programmes?

Do you need a free view box with a smart TV?

IceLollly · 11/07/2026 18:08

Yes, we have a smart tv. There some live stuff on there but it seems to be American stuff.

Does it have an aerial and have you tuned it? I don’t understand why a free view box is needed.

Londonnight · 11/07/2026 18:46

I have an ee freeview box. They used to be BT youview, but changed to EE. It works great, I can record, rewind, pause etc. I can record 4 channels at the same time. You do need an ariel though.
I can access netflix, prime, etc if I want to as well. But as you have to pay to use them I rarely do.

We haven’t got an aerial anymore? If I iust switch on the tv there’s no signal for it to pick up tv is there? We have a tv upstairs and it has a plug in aerial which is a massive pain in the arse.

I'd say a fire stick then if you don't have an aerial.

Sunshineandrainbow · 11/07/2026 19:11

Freely is on some TVs and picks up channels via the Internet
I have smart TV that gets iplayer etc from Internet but for live channels I need aerial cable from the loft. Feels a bit old fashioned to be honest!

IceLollly · 11/07/2026 19:37

The sky box is attacked to a dish on the side of the house. I think!
our tv is quite old.

wont a fire stick just be for streaming? He doesn’t want that. He wants to flick live tv

@IceLollly If you want to watch live TV get a plug in digital aerial. I have one around £25. Not fiddly at all.

IceLollly · 11/07/2026 19:54

Oh that might do! The one we have is old and you have to move it around a lot to get any signal.

No none of that get the position right and you shouldn’t need to move it again.

Download the Freeview app onto your smart TV and you won't need an aerial, just your WiFi connection.

Freely is brilliant. You watch all the live channels but without an aerial. It’s tiny and costs about £80
i just got one because I wanted my tv on a different side of the room and it’s brilliant.
I got the manhattan aero one and I totally recommend it.

I bought a Freesat box, connects to my sky dish. We did not have a working aerial.
