This whole thing about Farage and the Establishment

How has the son of a stockbroker, a millionaire public school boy, investment banker turned career politician managed to convince so many people he's one of them, acts in their interests, is not in fact part of the establishment but a man of the people?

You have to give credit where credit's due, it's very clever, but how exactly did he achieve it?

people are stupid unfortunately

Exactly what I was going to say.

GreenFootstool · 10/07/2026 13:21

But but BUT he smokes and drinks pints of beer on camera, so he's just like the average man, no?

The characterisation of him and Rupert Lowe as anything other then pure Establishment is a farce.

The absolute grifting cnut.

He goes on walkabouts feigning the common touch, while behind the scenes making himself ever more obscenely wealthy off the back of his shtick. People fall for it because he tells them what they want to hear. And more importantly, they see what they want to see.

It's scary.

Birthdayfeel · 10/07/2026 13:24

But it's working and not all poor disenfranchised people are stupid. How?

I think it’s cleverer than that. Farage is good at talking to people. He doesn’t speak like a politician, and they like that. They really do, and yes all the pints and fags are an act - Farage looks like a man who likes a cocktail and a cigar if anything, but it’s his manner people like. He’s Mr Straightforward - albeit that this image is looking a bit difficult to keep up for 5 million reasons

backformoreofthesame · 10/07/2026 13:25

Because he recognised they are disenfranchised?

GoneWithTHeWindJammers · 10/07/2026 13:25

He wears a flat cap and drinks pints of beer and smokes the odd fag.

Birthdayfeel · 10/07/2026 13:27

backformoreofthesame · 10/07/2026 13:25

Because he recognised they are disenfranchised?

Yes he has. And then he's exploited them and they "all" seem to think he's on their side.

I don’t think so. I think this thing about money bothers people, and it’s entirely the reason he wants the election at all. Being regarded as sleazy is not a good look

Pootles34 · 10/07/2026 13:35

I think a lot of racist people are fed up of 'them' saying they can't 'say anything', Nigel agrees with the racists, so he's one of the (racist) people and not one of 'them'.

GreenFootstool · 10/07/2026 13:37

He's always been sleazy @ByGraptharsHammer.

The non attendance at the European Parliament, not turning up to the fisheries committees, umpteen investigations into his expenses as an MEP plus the investigations and convictions of a UKIP MEP for fraud /a UKIP councillor convicted of fraud / a UKIP MP convicted of electoral fraud when he was in charge, his aide being convicted of fraud in the USA.....

Sometimes you are the company you keep and the rumours can be true.

That does sound sleazy, but I just don’t think people know. Farage is a good self promoting politician and a lot of that isn’t in the UK. Now he’s in the UK parliament, he gets scrutiny at home

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 10/07/2026 13:41

My parents liked him for a bit then went off him. They’re Lib Dem labour

So if say Badenoch did exactly the same she would be Mrs Straightforward?

Not to forget Nathan Gill making £40,000 spewing Russian propaganda.

A you gov poll post says most Britons think Farage is “very sleazy”.

I do not think Kemi Badenoch is anywhere near as personable as Nigel Farage. She seems the polar opposite to me! Farage is good at relating to people. I would say she is not. Their political style is totally different

By appealing to them, by giving them a tangible scapegoat. A reason why things are not working, and seem to be dismal for them. He just happens to be following a route that many before him have walked.

I think it's to do with the orange hue. Both him and trump, the more orange they get, they more people vote for them.

Adjust your sets!

I actually heard her on Desert Island Disks. She was brilliant, came across as decent, funny, warm, normal, but I agree that doesn't seem to come out in the course of her normal work.

Yes. All of this.

If you tell people what they want to hear they’re unlikely to question it.
