Do your children's schools have a teachers' race at sports day?

Apparently, a parent thought we were hugely unreasonable for not abandoning supervising our 200 odd pupils to line up and run a race this year.

Oh there is always one isn’t there. Probably one with way too much time on her hands.

Yes, ours does. It’s hilarious. Gets very competitive.

AnneLovesGilbert · 09/07/2026 23:06

No. Sports day is hard enough work for the whole school without any of that buffoonery.

I teach at lots of schools and only one of them has a teacher race. Although the type of parent you've encountered would complain regardless so you can't win really.

If it's a primary school then a good chunk of the teachers are pregnant or post partum or menopausal or various other versions of unfit and have no desire to demonstrate this in front of all the parents (I am a teacher and currently definitely haven't lost the baby weight from DC2 so feel this alot!).

Lex0207 · 09/07/2026 23:14

I’m a newbie (reception) but teachers (not all) just joined the parents race (ie adults race) and made it generally silly and non competitive- seemed a nice answer to me

Oliwiaa · 09/07/2026 23:33

Ours does (and a mums race, dads race, toddler race) but it's quite a small school only about 120 kids.

CandyFlossssss · 09/07/2026 23:47

Yes ours does but I’ve started leaving just before the parent and teacher races as im just not interested in watching them

Besidemyselfwithworry · 09/07/2026 23:49

No adult races here for parents or teachers
it’s all about the kids
except when they go ahead and do them in a bloody heatwave!

NerrSnerr · 09/07/2026 23:53

Yes ours has a teacher race. One teacher is also a parent so he did both. Not all the teachers did it and there seemed to be enough staff to supervise the approx 240 kids.

CypressGrove · 09/07/2026 23:56

Our primary had a combined teachers and parents race - just for those that wanted to do it. Was always good fun.

When I was at school in the 70s, we used to have a former pupils race on sports day, which was handicapped. We had this 90 something man whose claim to fame was that he was now the last living former pupil from the 19th century. They handicapped the 100m so he only had 10m to run. He won.

Iloveagoodnap · 10/07/2026 01:05

Yes my boys’ primary did. And a male teacher always won, same as a dad always won the parents’ race and the boys always won the class races. It really annoyed me that no races were ever
organised by sex!

wafflesmgee · 10/07/2026 06:00

We used to until some teachers sabotaged it by walking, which embarrassed those who wanted to run but made the point very clearly that the majority didn’t want to run!

Simonjt · 10/07/2026 06:36

Yes ours had a relay race, 100m and tug of war for the teachers, school of 1,200, everyone manages to behave while the do it.

SkankingWombat · 10/07/2026 06:37

DCs' school has a 4x200m teachers vs parents relay - there are some seriously fast parents and teachers, and it is very competitive! They also have 100m Mum and Dad races.

PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister · 10/07/2026 07:00

Secondary teacher here - we have a staff rota and, whilst sports day is going on, between us we run 105 laps of the track over the course of the day and thus complete the staff marathon.

edited to add - some walk it, some do it backwards. One year 2 people did their lap as a 3 legged race. It doesn’t matter, it all counts! It’s not a super competitive timed marathon 😂

JohnnieFedora · 10/07/2026 07:05

We have a parent Vs teacher relay. Teachers almost always win, because the PE staff take part and are usually fit/sporty men in early 20s, so the parents don't stand a chance 😂

Everybodysinthehousetonight · 10/07/2026 07:15

Adult races of any kind at kids sports days result in a lot of injuries. I'm a fit physio and I have never and would never participate in a athletic race with other adults who have not run in 20 years then suddenly think they are Usain Bolt.,...

I think the teachers do better but it's usually the sport's teachers doing it so conditioned. I've not seen a teacher race at secondary school though.

We had a ruptured Achilles in a dad the last time parents were allowed at my kids school.
