Why are there no weather warnings this week?

pastapestoparmesan · 09/07/2026 19:39

The weather and temperatures here in London are pretty much exactly the same as two weeks ago, when we had several days of amber and three days of red warnings. This prompted 3 half days at the school I work at, making it just about bearable. Not even a yelllow warning this week - why is that? Public transport, classrooms etc are just as hideous as two weeks ago!

I think it’s to do with the night temp dropping which means it’s not an official heatwave. When it never goes below 20 at night for multiple days you don’t get a break from the heat.

ramonaquimby · 09/07/2026 19:40

Pretty sure temps were hovering around 37/38 last week

Ginagogo · 09/07/2026 19:40

I was thinking the same? It’s just as bad if not worse than the last heat wave 🥵

school have said children must attend in uniform and not their p.e kit, however they shut before

I don't believe that's true - where?

Sparkletastic · 09/07/2026 19:41

Huh. That’s weird. I’ve just checked my area and you are correct even though we are hitting 31 degrees tomorrow. Has the Met Office thrown in the towel? The NHS is operating under amber alert.

RoseField1 · 09/07/2026 19:42

It's nowhere near as hot where I am on the South coast as it was during the heatwave. It's already cooler than it ever got at night during those few days and it's 7.40pm. a heatwave is only dangerous when it's impossible to cool down.

No they weren't. Not anywhere in the UK anyway.

Norfolk recorded 37.7 on the 26 June.

The bbc weather app says there are no warnings anywhere in the UK, but I’m sure I heard a few days ago there were?

I read it somewhere I know I did. Unless the heat has fried my brain 😅

Everywhere but the northeast is under an amber health alert.

Ooh. Wonder why the BBC and Met Office aren’t going with this?

Wonderknicks · 09/07/2026 19:53

So are they health alerts rather than weather alerts? I'm not sure if that is a thing, but funnily enough I'd just looked on the met office app to see what was going on

I don't think that's a criteria for a heat wave

But it hasn't hit gone below 20c here last night. Was in the communal garden with neighbours at 11 pm and it was 29.

I think it hit 36 during the day. It certainly did on my balcony. And the balcony is obviously covered. And wasn't in direct sun at the time I saw that.

I also think that perhaps it was considered too much fuss was made last time so they decided not to say anything this time?

they've definitely underdone the temperatures for my part of the world. The plastic bus seats were red hot - and the poor drivers OMG

I just got in and the neighbour told me that supermarket is heaving - I genuinely think people are hanging around there to get out of the heat!

i'm already dreading tomorrow. I've been in an air-conditioned place the last two days. It's not mine, I had a client who hired it and very kindly said to me that I could use it. Going to be very hot this weekend and then showing 30 all of next week. I'm quite worried that that's going to stretch into the week after.

I really feel the cold. I did not anticipate ever complaining about the heat. It's been really shocking.

It was late June I think. But again, that’s over a week ago.

TheSmallAssassin · 09/07/2026 19:55

The Heat Health Alerts are for health and social care providers, really. This time round it isn't so humid and we haven't got the "tropical nights".

That’s a very good question. I think that the health criteria and the Met criteria might be different.

For the Met Office “Amber Warning: There is an increased likelihood of impacts from severe weather, which could potentially disrupt your plans. This means there is the possibility of travel delays, road and rail closures, power cuts and the potential risk to life and property. You should think about changing your plans and taking action to protect yourself and your property. You may want to consider the impact of the weather on your family and your community and whether there is anything you need to do ahead of the severe weather to minimise the impact.”

…so a health warning might be wider than a threat to life 🤷‍♀️?

Where are you all that you haven't got the tropical nights? That's the worst bit.

I'm an excellent houseguest 😁

ShiftySquirrel · 09/07/2026 19:59

We closed when it was 36/37 degrees a few weeks ago. It's not as hot, but still above 30 outside and 31-33 degrees in each class. But it isn't as humid which is easier.

Here there's a good breeze outside tonight, hoping it'll be a bit cooler tomorrow. My bedroom is as hot as Satan's armpit though.

No doubt when we break up it'll be 18 degrees and drizzling! I'm going camping...

The heat health alerts are for a different audience, they are still from the Met Office in partnership with the UK Health Security Agency. Health and social care providers will need to take action to look after vulnerable people at lower thresholds than those for warning the general population?
