Why are there no weather warnings this week?

pastapestoparmesan · 09/07/2026 19:39

The weather and temperatures here in London are pretty much exactly the same as two weeks ago, when we had several days of amber and three days of red warnings. This prompted 3 half days at the school I work at, making it just about bearable. Not even a yelllow warning this week - why is that? Public transport, classrooms etc are just as hideous as two weeks ago!

I don't believe that's true - where?

They were in east London where we live. It was awful. We recorded 36 today

Where are you all that you haven't got the tropical nights? That's the worst bit.

I'm an excellent houseguest 😁

South London. We dropped to 19 last night. Which it didn’t in the last heatwave.

I’ve checked and it only goes down to 21 tonight

Norfolk recorded 37.7 on the 26 June.

Yes that was the heatwave that just happened. This isn't that.

It’s a mystery. I know it hasn’t got as hot in that 1 day it got to 34/35 a couple of weeks ago and today it’s been almost 34, but on all the other days that had weather warnings it was about the same temperature around 32-33C! Obviously realised it wasn’t exciting or sensible to just cancel everything this time 🤣. Some of it is probably media hyperbole. I know it’s hot but it’s just gone a bit crazy how everything is presented now.

I know it was hotter at night, but to be honest my child’s after school clubs and sports couldn’t run in the day time (with optional school half days which I ignored), even though the day temperature is exactly the same (bar the single day it got 1C hotter than now) they can this time and there’s no choice of half days!

So are they health alerts rather than weather alerts? I'm not sure if that is a thing, but funnily enough I'd just looked on the met office app to see what was going on

Why else would they need to warn people about extreme heat if not for reasons of health/safety?

pastapestoparmesan · 09/07/2026 20:11

I’m glad it’s not just me that thinks it’s weird. It’s almost like we just have to suck it up this time, but surely the risks of heatstroke etc during the day are the same regardless of the night time temperatures?

Well, exactly!

Quicksilver15 · 09/07/2026 20:12

Convinced the government told the met office to reign it in as they weren’t happy with all these silly school closures (which we now have mostly proved to be silly as they are all open bar a tiny couple of outliers). The night time temperatures just isn’t relevant to day time temperatures and activities if daytime temps are broadly similar in parts of the country that did close schools.

FTBregret · 09/07/2026 20:19

I’m in London, temp reached 35c today

Also think some previous posters mentioned we’re not having tropical nights this time as below 20c… that hasn’t been the case for where I’m based in London. Yesterday night the outside temperature was about 23c and inside my flat was 32c at night 😓

EmeraldRoulette · 09/07/2026 20:20

@Quicksilver15 glad it's not just me who thinks this 😂

Everygoodnameisgone · 09/07/2026 20:21

Erm, because it's summer weather in summerHmm

What kind of temperatures have you got?

UnaOfStormhold · 09/07/2026 20:24

It definitely isn't as hot in the daytime here but a week of nights like last night is going to leave me a sleep-deprived sweaty mess. Even the downstairs spare room, my normal refuge, was unpleasantly warm until about 3am.

WimbyAce · 09/07/2026 20:33

It is hot but not AS hot as the other week, temps were showing 36/37 then.

Edited

The nighttime temperatures are relevant though, because in the previous heatwave they remained high as well as being extremely humid so the fabric of the buildings retained the heat more, whereas if the nighttime temperatures are a bit lower with less humidity the buildings can cool down somewhat overnight.

The humidity is less than the last heatwave, in the last one the cold pipes and cistern in my downstairs loo had condensation dripping off them which hasn't happened in this heatwave (yet).

Yeah I'm pretty sure that's when the poster meant. It's not much of a slip to last last week instead of last time or the other week.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 09/07/2026 20:37

I saw an amber warning yesterday or today

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 09/07/2026 20:38

Oh there aren’t any on bbc

modgepodge · 09/07/2026 20:39

This week doesn’t feel anywhere near as bad as 2 weeks ago. When I got in my car for school pick up 2 weeks ago it was over 40 on 2 days - this week no higher than 36 (both of these are exaggerated as they drop 3-5 degrees within 5 mins of driving off).

there’s a breeze this time. I’m sat by my French windows quite comfortable now as there’s a lovely breeze. That wasn’t the case 2’weeks ago.

still too hot for my liking though. Last week was perfect - 24/25 degrees.

14-15° overnight here this last week. NW coast.

It was late June I think. But again, that’s over a week ago.

Edit nevermind I'm hot and irritable.

Laloubaloo · 09/07/2026 20:46

I'm sick of the heat. I prefer autumn and winter anyway but a nice sunny day at 25ish degrees is lovely.

This is awful. Too hot to do anything outside and impossible to keep the house cool even with everything closed up and fans on.

My 5 year old won't sleep until 9ish but its still too hot to be outside.

Its not as bad as 2 weeks ago but close.

LyndaSnellsSniff · 09/07/2026 20:47

I've been wondering this too. In my school, we've switched to relaxed uniform again and are not letting them outside at lunchtime. But in heat wave #2, we also had optional early collection after lunch, but not this time. This means that after morning break, we have 30 hot, sweaty, grumpy children cooped up inside where the ambient temp doesn't drop below 30° for 4 hours straight. It's been a real test of endurance this week!!

In addition, we have all the usual end of term chaos with senior leadership trying to shoehorn in as many "enrichment" activities as possible.

basiically · 09/07/2026 20:48

It`s the new normal, we just have to get use to it now.
