Is it normal for EV charging to be noisy?

I live in a terraced house. Back yard, backing onto a back lane.

The house almost directly behind me charges his work vehicle (self employed) in the back lane over night.

The issue is the noise it makes. A buzzing, whirring, humming noise. It's so loud I can't sleep with my bedroom window open. I can still hear it with the window closed but it's not unbearable.

I was under the impression EV charging was silent? This definitely isn't.

There's no point me addressing it with them. They're very inconsiderate. When they've had work done on their house, it spills over into the back lane. Their builders worked inconsiderately early (I think his work was done on the cheap, out of hours). Their skip was there for far longer than the 2 week booking period. Rubbish blew out and up and down the lane (they never cleared it up themselves). They pile stuff up in the back lane and leave it there for weeks.

It's not the end of the world, not being able to have the window open at night. But in this heat wave, it IS annoying.

Anyway. IS it normal for an EV on charge to be this loud?

No.

Ours is silent

Definitely not! Sounds dangerous, report it to your local DNO (Google as it depends where you live)

Mine is silent too. They all should be as far as I’m aware.

I have 2 right outside my apartment.

I never hear them being charged.

Ours is quiet, but it flashes constantly, pretty brightly, whilst it’s charging! Very annoying for DD as it’s under her window.
There are no street lights where we live, so it really draws attention to it too.

Is it the vehicle making the noise?

I’ve just got an EV car and when I charged it, fans kicked in on the car for cooling. Mind you I was using one of the quick chargers that charged the car in 15 mins and the charger was the size of a bungalow.

I’m getting a home one installed and was told the charger is silent.

It will most likely be the fans kicking in while it’s charging.

Theirs isn't quick. It's plugged in all night.

Last night, it was blissfully quiet and I thought maybe they'd resolved the noise. But no. Van wasn't there. It's back tonight and as loud as ever.

I don't think it used to be as loud. I remember seeing it there, charging, and there was no noise.

It’s the fans kicking in due to the heat. It probably is silent when it’s not so hot

Minibea · 10/07/2026 23:25

It won’t be the charger so not concerning from a safety perspective, as others have said, it’ll be the fans. Ours has a cabin overhead system which kicks in when it's hot, even when it’s not in use or you can manually set it to come on so it’s cooler (or warmer) when you want to use it. Annoying but not sure there’s much you can do about it.
