Really quite chuffed with my reusable light-reflecting window covers.

With my (until now) repressed Blue Peter creativity spirit I decided to hack up some decorating sheets and add some eyelets and shower suction hook suckers to create a covering for the outside of my (south facing) windows.

The bedroom coverings are suckers at the bottom and eyelets plus ribbons at the top so they can be lowered to different heights. Unsure if I will stick with this or go 100% suction.

Today the temp inside is 21 and outside it is 34 degrees. Inside curtains are also closed.

So far so good, they have not dropped off. No idea what might happen in a stiff breeze or when the heavens open. We shall cross that bridge when we come to it.

The eyelets, which by some miracle fit snugly over the nipple (cannot think of a more descriptive word) of the sucker.

Well done OP, you're a woman after my own heart. My sun canopy is made from some screw in hooks, an old blackout door curtain and a washing line.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 08/07/2026 15:12

Very ingenious OP! I 'shut' a towel in the back door (the top of it is glass), so it's held in place.

Nipple and sucker always go together! 😂

Brilliant!

Brilliant op ,we hang sheets also it makes a huge difference. Having said that DH has not got ours up so I'm expecting to roast soon 😓

They do! I gasped when they cleaved together. It was like the small god of craft-related heat-reducing projects intervened.

Looks like everyone has bought the eyelets!. Funnily enough I've just bought insect mesh and suckers to do around windows because we've had such an annoying influx of flies this year and I don't want velcro or magnetic tape stuck all round them. I've been contemplating an idea like yours for outside too with the emergency foil blankets but can't reach our upstairs south facing window to attach anything and I worry about the wind carrying anything off if I just use suckers (one window doesn't open so I can't weave anything through to secure inside)

KatiaMonsterTruckDriver · 08/07/2026 17:41

@RudolphTheReindeer that’s tricky. Can you stretch to deploy several suckers?

Well done OP, great work! Today I sellotaped foil emergency blankets to the outside of our windows, it's definitely cooler inside but I'm looking for something that looks less like we're some kind of conspiracy theorists trying to block alien mind rays!

No the non opening part of the window is huge and the opening window hinges at the top to open at the bottom so you can't even lean out and stretch across. There is a single storey extension roof underneath and if I get desperate I might well just climb on it and do it that way 😅

Cetera · 08/07/2026 19:24

Your windows sound like ours. 4 pane windows upstairs but only the end panes open so it’s hard to get to the middle panes, south facing with a pitched extension underneath.

WildFlowerBees · 08/07/2026 19:29

Right for this of us who’s upstairs windows are far too high for a ladder how do I achieve this sort of thing?

KatiaMonsterTruckDriver · 08/07/2026 19:47

I didn’t attach the bedroom ones with a ladder. I just opened them and did a reach around suction -press to the bottom of the panes and fed the ribbons over the top over the pane pulling the material taut. Then I tied the tied the ends of the ribbons together and hooked it under the handle.
