Things to do in Shrewsbury.

We are going to Shrewsbury for 2 nights (a stop-off when travelling from Ireland to Longleat Centre Parks). Do you have any recommendations as to what to do around there? Eg restaurants, tours, trips, museums, things to see/do. We are travelling with 3 kids aged 12, 11 and 8.
Thanks!

Also Ironbridge Gorge - fascinating history as the heart of the Industrial Revolution.

The jail is a great visit for kids, a boat trip up the Severn and a mooch around the town/abbey/streets. Food wise lots of pubs and cafes. It's been a while since I was there so not up to date.

Def the prison! Ironbridge and Blitz Hill was good - my 12 year old loved it

parachutegirl · 07/07/2026 22:35

Blists hill Victorian museum is a good shout and Ironbridge is lovely - especially the sausage rolls in the bakery 😋

Wildywondrous · 07/07/2026 22:36

We did the escape room at the prison then you can look around it afterwards.
There's also a splash pad in the Quarry park which is nice in hot weather.

Telford Town park is good. The ice rink is also next door.

SaraHoliday · 07/07/2026 22:46

Visit Ironbridge.

Some great places to eat in Shrewsbury. The award winning indoor market is excellent, and I’d thoroughly recommend the Moli Teahouse there for superb dumplings. Also CSONS for brunch or lunch - all locally sourced food and brilliantly inventive

For food The Armoury and Riverbank are both excellent and on the river. Dough & Oil for pizzas and Bobby’s Tacos also great. The Sabrina Boat is really worth it, about an hour I think. The Dana prison gets great reviews, and the castle and grounds are lovely. In this weather The Quarry park is stunning with lots on for children.

Attingham Park - National Trust. In town, Beefy boys for burgers, there is a lovely Vegan place Poke Kanu or posh pub The Mytton & Mermaid, Attingham Park. The prison is good too.

Run!!!!!!!! Sorry, but I spent the night in Shrewsbury and found the place possessed. Maybe I was just unlucky.

Barge at Llangollen Canal over the aqueduct - beautiful views .
Hoo Zoo / Attingham Park (NT) / Telford Town Park and Wonderland / The Quarry Park.
Blists Hill Outdoor Victorian Museum is really good
The British Ironworks Cemtre at Oswestry is worth a visit
Many lovely walks and trails in the nearby Shropshire Hills .

PeriPeriMayo · 07/07/2026 23:10

Also the boat trip up the river is good, goes from Victoria Quay near The Quarry and there's lots of nice places to eat near there. You can also hire canoes on the river.

CSons is fantastic although I've only been to the sister restaurant in Ludlow, but I'm told Shrewsbury one is just as good. The market is good, the river is nice, there is a nice boat you can take called the Sabrina, you can get a table for 4.

Olderbutt · 07/07/2026 23:15

The river cruises are good.
Shrewsbury jail.
Attingham Park and Ironbridge gorge especially if you have NT membership
Wroxeter Roman remains
Walk up the Wrekin

The prison was terrible - the « curation » was a few photocopied black an white A4 posters with tales of famous cereal killers… It had nothing to say and wasn’t striking. It had good reviews on Trip Advisor but at the end staff were sort of pressurising you to write one. Completely overpriced and pointless. Avoid.

Fawful · 07/07/2026 23:19

But yes to Ironbridge and the outdoor Victorian museum. 🙂

Brokenfurnitureandroses · 07/07/2026 23:20

Great recommendations here, thank you all. We will have lots of things to choose from!

Gelatristry does the best ice cream, dont be put off by the queue but it's worth the wait and they serve pretty quickly.

somekindof · 08/07/2026 13:42

If you like beautiful country side get the train to church stretton (about 20 mins) and then go for a walk up the Long Mynd - beautiful

Brokenfurnitureandroses · 08/07/2026 22:37

Shrewsbury really is a beautiful little town, I love all of the old-style buildings. We arrived today and explored a bit, we are going to Blists Hill tomorrow.🙂

Cereal killers??

There's a beautiful beautiful garden in the centre, designed by Percy Thrower. Well worth a look.
We ate at the smokehouse, which was fun, and a bit different for us as we don't have one anywhere near where we live.
