Just found this in my kitchen (it was already dead.) Is it a cockroach or some other weird creature?

Could it be a soldier beetle? Normally seen shagging on umbellifers.

Looks like a cockroach to me 😣

SapphireSeptember · 07/07/2026 20:22

Oh bollocks, just what I need. I've been finding weird little snails in my bathroom and I really don't want cockroaches as well. 😭

I don't think that's a cockroach. I don't think it's the right shape. I speak as someone who experienced the horrors of sodding cockroaches when I lived abroad. Bleurgh.

smallglassbottle · 07/07/2026 21:54

Looks like a common red soldier beetle. They're harmless.

ShakyBake · 07/07/2026 22:37

Snails you say? This is possibly a insect of the oinkyoink family, they start life in a shell but transform (mutate) into a winged bat like creature that live off the blood from a human big toe at night

SaraHoliday · 07/07/2026 22:51

Can these also be black too? Do they have a flat back?

I got hit on the neck by one in the garden last year. I ended up with a bruise on my neck for a week or so - it looked like a love bite!

PinkNailPolish2026 · 07/07/2026 22:53

I agree with others it looks like a soldier beetle.

swingingbytheseat · 07/07/2026 22:55

Harmless & definitely not a cockroach

SapphireSeptember · 08/07/2026 04:28

Thanks everyone! I won't have to fumigate my flat now. I googled 'common red soldier beetle' instead of just 'soldier beetle' and it looks like one of those.

@ShakyBake Lol! Yes, little flat black ones. They're really fragile as just picking them up with loo roll squishes them.

There's also a massive spider in my bathroom, I have named her Georgia. Think she's a giant house spider. She can stay, as I keep finding mosquitos in my house! She's currently hiding behind the radiator, she was on the wall but moved when I had a shower.

Mosquitoes? Where do you live?

Mosquitoes? Where do you live?

What's your point? There are 30-odd species of mosquito in the UK.

Mosquitoes? Where do you live?

East Anglia, there's loads of bodies of water around me!

Fair, I realised as soon as I posted we do have them but I've never actually heard people refer to them as mosquitos in this country and had kind of disassociated "mozzies" from mosquitos which I associate with hotter countries. Brains be weird.

SapphireSeptember · 08/07/2026 12:01

To be fair, I usually call them mozzies, but called them mosquitoes for some reason!

Georgia is still hiding. Hope she's okay. 😊
