Do you check your energy bills when you have a DD?

If you pay your energy bills by DD, do you check your energy bills when you are sent them or do you just file / delete? I will admit that I did not check mine until earlier this year when my bills seemed weird. Too hard to explain. Turned out that they had been estimating my bills for 4 months even though I have a smart meter. They tried to reduce my DD to something silly which I knew was wrong so I changed it back. Then when my contract was up they used this ridiculously low figure to give me suggested new tariffs with cheaper monthly payments. I did my own calculations and shopped around and left them.
Today I got my final bill and I appeared to owe them more than I expected. I checked my bills and discovered that my DD for 2 June was not showing on the bill even though it was on my bank statement.

British Gas tried to steal £170 from me!! I have already contacted them and will hopefully receive an amended bill.
Warning, check your bills, be smarter than them.

I read your thread title and thought, why does having a daughter mean you need to check your energy bills?? 😳😁

anon2022anon · 06/07/2026 16:05

Yes, I do.
Smart meters are pretty pointless, they fail too often, and I don't want to pay more than I should or get an unexpectedly large bill

Yes, I still put in monthly meter reads. I like to work with credit on the account so I want to see the actual amounts used to make sure I’m not making inroads into my credit.

Yes. I check all bills.

As per PP, I send in monthly readings (except this month - im on holiday). I dont have/want a smart meter; taking my own readings is very simple and quick. I give the bills a cursory glance before deleting.

Me too! I came on to say, there are people who check their energy bills and people who don't bother - but having daughters doesn't make you more likely to be one type or another!

Ha Ha yes DD - Direct Debit, although when my DD was at home she did use a lot of electricity!
My main point was British Gas not crediting my account with my June payment. Theft in my book

I give monthly readings and always check my annual statement.
