Experiences of hiring a car in Spain, especially Tenerife with Goldcar

Has anyone used Goldcar in Spain, especially in Tenerife, for car hire?

They are incredibly cheap but I know they've been repeatedly crossed by Which for putting pressure on customers to buy top up insurance etc, and for exaggerating/making up damages.

So I thought I'd ask for experiences here. We are planning on buying top up insurance elsewhere which is much better value and well be carefully photographing/videoing the car before return, but I'm wondering if they are more hassle than they are worth?

We’ve always used Autoreisen in the Canaries and found them to be excellent, never had a problem.
If they are not a lot more I’d go with them.

We used Autoreisen and it was really easy and professional.

Avoid gold car!

Just what everyone else says, avoid Goldcar, use Autoreisen. Look at Moneysaving Expert's advice on holiday hire car, make sure you understand fuel policies and what insurance actually covers.

Goldcar won't be cheap once they've sold you a load of fuel you won't use and forced you to take their top up insurance and/or a leave 4 figure deposit that you might not get fully refunded.

Autoreisen all the way, great customer service, reasonably priced, decent cars, no hidden charges...wouldn't use anyone else

Used cicar - amazing service and very very reasonable. I hate hiring cars but they made it really easy and aren’t precious about damage. Avoid Gold.

Just to be clear, if we did go with gold car, we would absolutely not be taking top up insurance with them, no matter how much they push the hard sell.

The excess hold would be on a credit card, so we could hopefully claim back from the bank if needs be.

But I am concerned as to the likelihood of ending in a protracted argument with them afterwards.

But I also can't really justify the jump from £40 to nearly £300 which is what the companies suggested here would cost.

I guess I'd like to know if anyone has had a neutral experience with them or if them trying to scam me is an inevitability? I might still go with them, but I want to make sure if I do, it's with eyes wide open as to their shittyness.

Just for comparison, I've reserved a car from Autoreisen in September, with the full insurance (€3/day), it's costing me €114 for the week...car is usually a Dacia Stepway/Jogger/Sandero. I go 2-3 times a year and never had an issue

Edited

I've checked and it's not the most expensive, but still 3 times the price of one of the budget hard sell ones.

We always use CI Car in the Canaries. Usually get an upgrade and hassle free service.

Avoid gold car - look at the reviews on trust pilot- tells you all you need to know.

we hired from them in mainland Spain, we made sure they’d logged any scratches and bumps before we took the car and we took a detailed video. Had no bumps or scrapes while we were using it and they still charged us €800 for damages when we returned it. Horrible end to the holiday. It’s a false economy to use them.
