Very worried as ive been diagnosed with an overactive thyroid. My thyroid has been u der and made stable with thyroxine but it's now overactive and the dose of thyroxine was changed and it's still overactive so they have changed it again and in 6 weeks I will have another blood test to see what's what. I. So worried as this can lead to heart failure. I am having palpitations and lkst weight and have fatigue. Ive never been so worried I can't eat or sleep due to the worry.

I have an underactive thyroid as well as it is really normal for it to take quite a few months, and quite a few blood tests, for them to get the correct dosage. Do you think the palpitations and fatigue and weight loss are caused by the stress? Ask for the actual blood test results, it's likely that it isn't over by a huge amount.

This happened to me. Try not to worry. If it was so overactive that it could be potentially harmful I am sure they would have stopped the thyroxine completely rather than alter the dose. But if you are worried discuss with GP.

Not caused by stress. They are side effects if overactive thyroie

I was told it have too much thyroxine causing mt thyroud to ve too high. My glands are not swollen which happens when you have an enlarged thyroid. Ive been told to take it easy told I get a blood test showing my thyroid is stable

When i googled it said a thyroid that is too high is the same as an overactive thyroid and ive veen told my thyroid is too high so I must have an overactive thyroid

Yes, I was on too high a dose and I went from under to overactive. Once the right dose was established all was fine.I am sure it will be the same for you.

It sounds like you have been over treated on thyroxine. Needs can change over time. Reducing the dose will hopefully bring your thyroid back into a normal range and your symptoms of being overactive will stop. It isn't unusual for dosages to need to be increased or decreased at different points in treatment so I wouldn't worry too much.

I had uncontrollable overactive thyroid for 2 years discovered during pregnancy and closely monitored. When it was discovered my levels were so hugh they was surprised I hadn’t noticed feeling unwell, following birth I was told to expect levels to be hard to manage while everything settled unfortunately the never did doses up and down every 6-12 weeks eventually ended up with a total removal of my thyroid due to being unable to control with medication. They did offer me radiation however I had very young g children and couldn’t be away from them for that long.

what I’m getting at is you are being monitored if they were concerned it was life threatening they would be doing something more drastic mine was all over for 2 years before they were concerned enough and even then there were still less drastic options. I understand the feeling people joke it must be lovely having overactive thyroid being able to loose weight easy ect but I know from experience how stressful and worrying the symptoms can be. Just keep taking the dose they have suggested and see in 6 weeks you may be surprised.

good news is I now technically have under active thyroid (even though I don’t have one) and it’s been a lot easier to control

I know it’s easy to say but please try not to worry, it’s great you’re being monitored and adjusting your dose will eventually get it to a normal level, but it is a process. My thyroid is overactive and I take medication to reduce it. Feeling really anxious, and on edge is a symptom as your body is slighlty in overdrive. It will improve once your levels get better but that will take a bit of time. have you spoken to your doctor/consultant about the anxiety symptoms? I know for people being treated with overactive thyroid sometimes they prescribe medication to help with these symptoms. The British Thyroid Association has some really helpful advice.

Arlanymor · 03/07/2026 20:11

Kindly - the health service are doing everything they can for you. Your anxiety is something you need to get under control. Not eating or sleeping will harm your condition and it is up to you to try and deal with it

Thanks for messages. I feel calmer now

Hashimotos disrase affects the thyroid. Maybe i should ask if i could be tested for that . Ive had an underactive thyroid for a few years. But never been advised to get a test for hashimotos
