How many school polo shirts per year?

How many school polo shirts do you buy for your child, ready for the next school year?

6 - I wash the whites once per week. I like one spare back up in case a stain hasn’t shifted or one gets permanently stained. That does the school year.

labradormam · 03/07/2026 00:08

Ideally 3 but some years I’ve only had two and it’s been fine. I always do a midweek wash

Six

I have like 10 I think, I wash her whites alone so her socks pants and vests and polos. I then buy new every other month or so because I don’t like how they look or thrown away due to stains. She wears new everything everyday except her cardigan she has two and wears one for half the week and then the other

soupmaker · 03/07/2026 00:25

Five. I never threw out stained ones. As long as they’d been washed and given a quick rub with the iron they kept wearing them to the end of the year. Always made sure a non stained one was worn for school photo and achievement ceremony!

YerAWizardHarry · 03/07/2026 00:28

5 here, too. Have done since he started school 10 years ago.

Olive42 · 03/07/2026 05:21

Six in primary. . One for each day of the week and one spare for photos etc… they would tend to last two years so i didn’t feel too wasteful.

I would have bought fewer (say three) but didn’t always fit a wash in mid-week due to my working pattern and general near exhaustion (and maybe a little bit of laziness thrown in for good measure) some times and wanted to be sure they had enough.

Olive42 · 03/07/2026 05:23

Sorry, just to add, my DC tended to need a different one each day as they would regularly drop stuff down themselves.

OhBettyCalmDown · 03/07/2026 05:28

We have 3. Mine wear PE kit 2 days a week so one clean shirt per day

SixAndJuliet · 03/07/2026 05:33

6 for my son who came home grubby every single day. There would usually be one a year that ended up completely ruined.

My daughter has 4 but I could have got away with less, especially as she wears a PE T-shirt twice a week. She keeps herself a lot cleaner.

In both cases, I only ever bought one school branded polo per year and the rest were supermarket multi packs.

SummitWrong · 03/07/2026 05:33

I tend to get 2x large multipacks from somewhere like Asda. Cheap and cheerful and doesn't break the bank. Think we've had 10 on rotation this year, but I have a very low tolerance for dirty/stained/outgrown uniform because of my own childhood so mine has a clean set every day. I do a planet-killing white wash at the end of each week. School shirts and the odd bra or pair of socks are the only whites we have.

ShetlandishMum · 03/07/2026 05:34

6 in primary. 1 branded/5 unbranded.

VIII · 03/07/2026 05:35

I got two packs of 5 and then when they've inevitably had a growth spurt I've picked up some more along the way.

I'm amazed at the children making it through with less than one a day even if they wear PE for part of it. Mine is approaching the end of year 1 and still comes home most days looking like he's been up a chimney.

RedStripeLeaf · 03/07/2026 05:38

Six. PE twice a week, so that covers a couple of weeks, and if we're away over a weekend and don't get washing done or whatever, there's no stress.

Bubbleybees · 03/07/2026 06:06

5, plus a pe t shirt. Even with a midweek wash we always seem to be playing hunt the shirt (spoiler: they're usually in the ironing pile!). I think my daughter could get away with 3 as she generally seems to come home looking less like she's rolled in mud, despite only being in reception! But then she also has dresses we rotate in so that helps reduce the number of shirts needed.

Andnowshesapreschooler · 03/07/2026 06:51

I opted for eight sets of everything to give me space if the weekend ran away with us etc. one day per week she's in PE so it's kit all day.
Some of her pinafores have ended up looking more worn than others because tbh sometimes I wash tumble and it's ready to go again 😆.

Sherararara · 03/07/2026 06:54

3 - They get washed during the week so you don’t need any more.

Bitzee · 03/07/2026 06:58

You want 1 for every day of the week they’ll wear them, so probably 4 since 1 day will likely be PE kit. But check in case it’s a 3:2.

TheChosenTwo · 03/07/2026 07:00

I always bought 6, clean one every day and don’t have many other white clothes so only do one white wash a week.

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 03/07/2026 07:01

At least 5. They usually come in packs of 2, or 3, so i sometimes end up with 6.

APinkAndSpottyGiraffey · 03/07/2026 07:03

Asda used to do a reasonably priced 5 pack, so I always bought that. I’d still buy it if the kids were still in junior school. Good quality and cheap, washed well and stayed white, all I needed really.

PurpleThistle7 · 03/07/2026 07:03

I ended up getting 5 of everything but we don’t have PE kit and nothing is branded so it’s just 5 black shorts and joggers, polos and sweatshirts from Sainsbury’s and we are done.

LostMySocks · 03/07/2026 07:05

DS have shirts rather than polo's and wears then 3 days a week (PE t shirt the rest of the time)
Each has 6 but I buy 3 each year in the size up so they last for 2 years. Means I can do a shirt wash every other weekend which really helps keep them not too grubby.

Morepositivemum · 03/07/2026 07:06

A pack of three per child

ithinkilikethislittlelife · 03/07/2026 07:13

I buy Asda ones as I have to constantly re buy them as he refuses to wear red and insists on white (they can wear either). He gets them ridiculously stained so I seem to buy a pack of 5 every few weeks 😵‍💫
