Does anyone else hate having their hair cut? (light hearted, kind of)

I rarely have my hair cut for various reasons.
I have it cut, then ignore it, it grows and gets piled up on my head every day, I get fed up 12 months later and have it cut again. I hate my hair anyway - it’s lank, fine, thinning rapidly due to severe anaemia plus other deficiencies and greying at a rate of knots.

I don’t have a regular hair salon and am always underwhelmed after a visit to a new one (end up snipping bits off that annoy me as soon as I get home) so I never return to the same one.
Last time I went to one, the stylist was pleasant enough, gave me a bit of advice re: which colour to go for when it was time to box dye it and I was given a loyalty card. Well, my hair is shocking again so I booked to return to the same salon today.
I’ve left so despondent again. She barely spoke to me, asked for a reference photo, said “oh I like that” but then proceeded to do my hair nothing like the photo 🙈 I did say several times that I wanted it all cut off but she just said “maybe go a bit shorter this time and do a big chop next time, especially if you don’t want to cut it regularly”. I just gave up
in the end, let her cut (well, trim) it and left.
Another one off the list.

I have accepted that I will never have the lush thick hair of my dreams but just hate the disappointment of it all.

Anyone else?

Yes, pretty much. I go once or twice a year. They never cut it as I want it, so I end up attacking it with nail scissors. It's boring and so overpriced where I live. DH goes to the barber once a month for twenty pounds. He can't believe they won't cut my hair for less than £80 round here. To get the top stylist it's over £100 just for a cut and blow dry, no colour, no highlights, no treatments.

CheesusWept · 01/07/2026 22:22

I haven’t been to a hairdresser for 14 years.
I cut and dye my own hair (and it probably shows!)

I hated the whole experience - making small talk, the cost, never getting what I wanted/expected, the length of time it took…

After the last time when it took about 4 hours for a dye and cut, which didn’t look like I’d expected, and cost more than £100, I just thought ‘sod that, never again.’

boiledsweeties · 01/07/2026 22:37

I hate it it’s always so hot and uncomfortable! Sweaty leather chairs and plastic capes. The bending your head back to get it washed. The hairdryer noise and then trying to talk to you at the same time. I can never wait to get out 😂

I just cut my own at home. Bought some proper scissors during the pandemic, I used to do it with kitchen scissors. Didn’t even go before my wedding. It helps that I have it medium to long and all one length. I also don’t really care how it looks.

MCF86 · 01/07/2026 22:43

Yep, hate it. I did go at Easter, but it had been two years (and some) since the previous visit!

socks1107 · 01/07/2026 22:44

Yes but I have a fab hairdresser. She’s done my hair now for 18 years. I go to her home now and we talk it through, no washing, no faff she just cuts my shape back in and we have a chat. It’s all I cope with but I do go every 5 weeks. It helps as she is so good. She did my wedding hair too I won’t let anyone else touch it

Frenchfried · 01/07/2026 22:46

Hate it. Hate it. Hate it.

I got really lucky once, and got dumped on the junior, who was concentrating so hard on the cut that she couldn’t talk as well. So relaxing, She also did exactly what I asked her to do, without any push back and it was the best hair cut I’ve ever had. I have kinks that they can straighten out but reappear after a day or two, and usually I have to trim again to get it to sit right.

I went back 6 months later but she’d gained confidence, experience and was just like the rest.

gotmyselfintoapickle · 01/07/2026 22:47

I hate it because I have highlights, which take ages. I have so little time to do things I actually enjoy and yet I have to take 3hrs out of my life to sit and stare at my haggard face whilst my perfectly nice (but exceptionally dull) hairdresser rabbits away whilst doing my foils.

DappledThings · 01/07/2026 22:51

Yep, hate it. My hair is really thick and puffy. It doesn't seem to matter how much they use the thinning scissors and no matter how much I tell them I hate how thick it is they always blow-dry in a way that adds volume. I need shrinkage not volume.

I manage to go about once a year. I wish there was a pill you could take so you can choose to have your hair just stop growing.

AImportantMermaid · 01/07/2026 22:57

Yep - thankfully thick wavy hair and the Brad Mondo unicorn cut I learned during lockdown has meant I haven’t needed to go near a unicorn in 6 years.

EasternStandard · 01/07/2026 22:59

I don’t find it enjoyable but I read rather than chat which helps a bit. And ask for a quick hair wash rather than x2 plus head massage.

Plasticdreams · 01/07/2026 23:04

I hate it too. They always brush it too roughly and break it. My hair is fine. I also hate looking at my face when taking for 2 hours or whatever.

ThaneOfGlamis · 01/07/2026 23:04

Have hated it my whole life. Bought some scissors during covid and never went back. I would love to have shorter hair, but that would require regular visits to a hair dresser to maintain, so is never going to happen. I laugh at the mortgage affordability question on how much I spend annually on hairdressing
Zero thanks!

Holymolymoon · 01/07/2026 23:05

I have curls and unless I'm willing to pay a lot, the hairdresser doesn't know what they are doing. Although last time I paid extra for someone who clearly had no idea what she was doing. My hair looked like if I had done it myself and couldn't be fucked.

MrsAvocet · 01/07/2026 23:07

I've got really thick hair and it takes ages to cut it and forever to dry. Normally I just let it dry naturally and if ai wash it in the morning it's still damp underneath when ai go to bed. I never blow dry it as I lose patience after I have done about a quarter of it. My hairdresser is obvioisly much quicker but it still takes ages so I find getting it done really boring. Unless there's a special occasion I go about twice a year and trim my own fringe in between. It is better if the junior is free too as they'll dry one side of my hair each which obviously reduces he time and tedium. I could never have my hair coloured as I'd lose patience and walk out with it only half done. I can't understand hpw anyone can find it enjoyable. I put it in the same category as going to the dentist or optician - something that hasto be toleratedevery so often.

AmberSpy · 01/07/2026 23:11

I hate it too! I hate looking in the mirror when they're cutting your hair - I look like a drowned rat with my hair plastered to my scalp, and the bright salon lights highlighting every flaw in my skin 🫠

Yes to the rough brushing! I have fine hair too and end up with loads of breakages. Surely they should know to take it easy.

My best hairdressers were from Japen and trained there too. They were so gentle and precise but I don't live near them anymore. I'm slowly making my way through every hairdresser in town to find a good one.

Morepositivemum · 01/07/2026 23:17

Could you ask your gp if it’s ok for you to take biotin? I had to come off it for blood tests so I’d be afraid it effects something you might need due to anaemia but it has given my hair both life and hope! It’s not tjicker really but feels a hundred times healthier and looks glossy and in great condition. I use nature plus

DancingFerret · 01/07/2026 23:18

It's the whole salon thing I can't stand - all the faff and theatre of it. I found a hairdresser who works from her home and is happy to do just a dry cut.

I always end up with tufty hair at the front where it breaks. My current hairdresser is starting to get it but it’s taken time and patience and me giving strict instructions.

XenoBitch · 01/07/2026 23:39

Yes. The first time I went to a salon was in my 30s! I can not stand people touching my hair or head at all. As a kid, my hair was awful as I would not let anyone near me.

I tried to be grown up and went to a salon. The hairdresser kept going on about how "scared" I looked, and then berated me for not bringing in a picture of a hair style I wanted. I just wanted my split ends cut off.

In my whole life, I have gone to a salon 3 times. My hair is now a ratty mess. It looks terrible. But I don't want anyone near me.

Can I do a basic trim at home?

RNApolymerase · 01/07/2026 23:43

I haven't been to a hairdresser since the 1900s. I hate it. People touch your head and then make small talk and cut too much hair off and it's really expensive.

YourWinter · 01/07/2026 23:47

Yes. I cut my own. It’s a bit past shoulder length because I like it long enough to tie or clip back, I just pull it into a high ponytail and cut the end off once it twice a year. It layers it a bit, it has a slight wave anyway which hides any unevenness, though I seldom wear it loose.

Near a unicorn = Near a hairdresser? 😄

I just googled this and may never go to a hairdresser and part with a months mortgage payment again !! Brad Mondo I love you ❤️
