Does anyone else hate having their hair cut? (light hearted, kind of)

WonderingAndOverthinking · 01/07/2026 22:17

I rarely have my hair cut for various reasons.
I have it cut, then ignore it, it grows and gets piled up on my head every day, I get fed up 12 months later and have it cut again. I hate my hair anyway - it’s lank, fine, thinning rapidly due to severe anaemia plus other deficiencies and greying at a rate of knots.

I don’t have a regular hair salon and am always underwhelmed after a visit to a new one (end up snipping bits off that annoy me as soon as I get home) so I never return to the same one.
Last time I went to one, the stylist was pleasant enough, gave me a bit of advice re: which colour to go for when it was time to box dye it and I was given a loyalty card. Well, my hair is shocking again so I booked to return to the same salon today.
I’ve left so despondent again. She barely spoke to me, asked for a reference photo, said “oh I like that” but then proceeded to do my hair nothing like the photo 🙈 I did say several times that I wanted it all cut off but she just said “maybe go a bit shorter this time and do a big chop next time, especially if you don’t want to cut it regularly”. I just gave up
in the end, let her cut (well, trim) it and left.
Another one off the list.

I have accepted that I will never have the lush thick hair of my dreams but just hate the disappointment of it all.

Anyone else?

Nope - sorry. I love it. Especially having someone else washing my hair!

I haven't been to a hairdresser since the 1900s. I hate it. People touch your head and then make small talk and cut too much hair off and it's really expensive.

Since the 1900s...?

I love it. My hairdresser takes her time to chat through what I want and how she can do it. She's calm, makes me feel relaxed and I'm always thrilled with the result. She charges me £25 for a cut and I give her a biggish tip because she's magic. Took me years to find her

I don't hate it. Not thrilled by the amount of time it takes sometimes , particularly after work. But I will not cut my own hair or colour it. It's a recipie for disasterm I have poor fine motor skills and I'd end up with a bald patch 😂 what I do love is the way it makes me feel I have a fab hair dresser who really listens and I just enjoy that she cares never makes me feel silly and gently tells me no when I want a blue bixie.

Middlemarch123 · 02/07/2026 18:30

I don’t enjoy it, but suffer it, blonde jaw length bob. Colour it myself and have found a good hairdresser 10 minutes walk from home. She dry cuts it, but actually wets it with a spray, and I dry when I get home. In and out in thirty minutes.

BoldNavyCritic · 02/07/2026 18:30

I hate it too. I hate the small talk and I hate them telling me it looks much better afterwards, even if it's true. I am 61 and I have long grey hair. Every so often I put a bag clip on it a few inches from the end and cut it straight across with good scissors. This approach works fine and saves both money and stress.

heartsinvisiblefury · 02/07/2026 18:34

I hate it. I have a short thick pixie cut and I do it myself with a razor and thinning scissors.

Flampert · 02/07/2026 18:47

Also not a fan, but it's easier now I have a regular hairdresser.

If you are having a bad day (or any day really) I would ask if you can just read quietly while they work. It's making their job way easier than the alternative, which is trying to make small talk with someone who doesn't want to chat.

Wibbleys · 02/07/2026 18:53

I find having a haircut so toe curlingly awkward that I never go back to the same salon twice.

I have even resorted to using different versions of my first and middle name to book the appointment.

trixieinnewyork · 02/07/2026 18:54

Yes I've totally stopped going too. DH cuts it now from a Youtube tutorial. When I tell poeple DH cuts it they look appalled and say things like 'you must be brave!'

My logic is that I always hated it when I'd been to the hairdressers anyway - this way I might still hate it but I'd be £70 better off and won't have wasted half my precious day off.

And actually I don't usually hate it - he's the kind of person who likes to learn new things and is proudly expanding his range of hairdresser services

Nottogetapenny · 02/07/2026 18:56

My husband absolutely hates getting his hair cut! He says he would rather go to the dentist for treatment than get his hair cut!

Flampert · 02/07/2026 19:05

@trixieinnewyork your last paragraph - he sounds lovely!

I OTOH cut my son & husband's hair in lockdown, and was delighted to retire my services!

NerdyBird · 02/07/2026 19:06

I have a mobile hairdresser do mine. I never particularly enjoyed the salon thing apart from the head massage, plus it was getting so expensive. Now I’ve developed an allergy to a common ingredient in shampoos and conditioners it’s just too much faff checking all the products they use etc.

Screamingabdabz · 02/07/2026 19:10

Yep me too. Hate my neck hurting in those sinks and sitting around for hours for a colour that is never right. I’ve ghosted my previous hairdresser - she could cut well but was bossy and pushy and it was always about what made her life easier despite it being around £150. The last time she coloured my hair I looked like Catherine Tate’s Nan, when I wanted something more like Mariella Frostrup so never again.

I do use box dye and Brad mondo method but it looks a mess. I do wish a professional could it, but quickly and cheaply without all the faff and angst.

EnglishBreakfastTea1 · 02/07/2026 19:12

Yes, because my hair is quite difficult and I've rarely left satisfied. I get a new style and it lasts all of an hour before it frizzes up. My loathing for getting my hair cut has increased over the length of my life. I also do not like telling a stranger if I'm going out later that day or if I'm going anywhere nice for my holiday. It costs an absolute bomb too.

I last had a restyle last November (£100!) which was a disaster. So I've been growing it out again. I recently saw a woman a bit older than me rocking a beautiful plaited bun, so I think this is the last time I will attempt to style it and let it grow long with biannual trims.

XenoBitch · 01/07/2026 23:39

Yes. The first time I went to a salon was in my 30s! I can not stand people touching my hair or head at all. As a kid, my hair was awful as I would not let anyone near me.

I tried to be grown up and went to a salon. The hairdresser kept going on about how "scared" I looked, and then berated me for not bringing in a picture of a hair style I wanted. I just wanted my split ends cut off.

In my whole life, I have gone to a salon 3 times. My hair is now a ratty mess. It looks terrible. But I don't want anyone near me.

Can I do a basic trim at home?

Yes ive been doing it for years occasionally my daughter checks my levels if I think ive gone wonky but for the most part I keep it straight

Rabbithill · 02/07/2026 19:12

Yes. I hate everything from how painful the sink was on the back of my neck to the small talk and tellings-off when I'd trimmed it myself between yearly visits. I haven't been to a hairdresser since 2012. I've got better things to do with my time and money. I cut my hair myself, and now I do my husband's and DC's too.
My hair looks fine, no one ever comments negatively on it, and I even have a fringe. I use a vague method half remembered from youtube videos I watched ages ago.

thelongesday · 02/07/2026 19:15

I haven't been to the hairdressers since I was 11 - 40 years ago. I'm not paying for something I hate, I just trim the ends myself every now and then when it's wet. I have a few greys and intend to just go grey naturally so don't have to worry about dying it.

Yes you van, look up Brad mondo

SheilaWilde · 02/07/2026 19:26

I hate it too. I’ve got short hair and just cut it myself. Whenever I have been it never looks any different than when I do it. Except I’m £50 worse off. I sometimes go over it with clippers and a number 10 guard and sometimes just chop bits as and when they annoy me. I’d love to find a good hairdresser who just ‘gets’ what I want but I think I’ve given up.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 02/07/2026 20:05

Ugh, me! I have gone from an annual haircut to only ever having it properly done if I know that I am going to be on a photograph on a family member's wall (e.g. weddings and things) for the next hundred years. Fortunately, I do not go to a lot of weddings, which means a lot less time spent trying to avoid looking at myself in the mirror, being offered juice (I am over 18!), and hairdressers are probably relieved that they don't have to deal with The Untamed Mane! My favourite one when I was in my teens once said, "Your hair is very fine, but there is a lot of it, and all of this blow-drying is really making my arms hurt!" 😁

Ponderingwindow · 02/07/2026 20:10

I haven’t had a professional
haircut since 2019. I have allergies that make going to the salon very difficult, even with a stylist being careful. Just being in the salon itself causes problems.

When covid hit and we were forced to diy, I discovered that it is surprisingly easy to give myself a decent haircut.

I started with just some straight shears, but quickly added some thinning scissors. I have a few cuts I do now depending on my mood. I can even do the long layers I tend to prefer.

it would probably be harder to do a short style, but that isn’t something I have ever worn.

MaggieBsBoat · 02/07/2026 20:13

Gosh I thought it was just me!!!

I loathe it. I hate having my hair washed and my head fiddled about with by a stranger while they make inane chat (that the probably also hate) and I really just don’t know how to do small talk. I don’t want to sit in a chair for two hours.
my hair is long and thick and hard work. I go every couple of years of forced to. My DH bought my a Dyson Airwrap as a quicker way of making a style if I wanted it, myself. I occasionally snip the ends away.

Thanks. I have seen his videos come up on FB... mostly fails 😂 I just looked at his YouTube, and there are guides on how to cut your own hair.

Wish me luck! 😅

Tonissister · 01/07/2026 22:20

Yes, pretty much. I go once or twice a year. They never cut it as I want it, so I end up attacking it with nail scissors. It's boring and so overpriced where I live. DH goes to the barber once a month for twenty pounds. He can't believe they won't cut my hair for less than £80 round here. To get the top stylist it's over £100 just for a cut and blow dry, no colour, no highlights, no treatments.

So your husband spends £240 on haircuts per year and you spend £160? Surely he can see that women’s cut and colour including a wash and blow dry would be more expensive due to the time and training required compared to barbers?
