Good snacks to take for children to eat at a wedding (bonus points for vegan + no need for keeping cold!)

We have a family wedding coming up in the UK in a few weeks. All catering is vegan and our children are the only children invited. Bride has reached out to me as it's a morning ceremony and then wedding breakfast isn't until 4pm. She's worried the kids will be very hungry (I agree!) and has suggested I bring some snacks for them. Obviously I'm more than happy to do this, but I just find I'm drawing a blank beyond a couple of ideas. I guess ideally we're looking for meat-free finger foods that aren't too messy given they'll be in smart clothes.

Please feel free to pop your suggestions here as I'm confident Mumsnet will broaden my idea horizons!

Thanks all 😊

Btw no idea if Soreen is vegan, I'd go meat free! I'm pescatarian personally but I don't think anyone will pay attention to what your DC are secretly eating, don't worry about it too much. Bride and groom prob just didn't want to contribute to people eating meat with their wedding food, rather than banning meat from the premises altogether

Soreen is vegan.

Children eat vegan food all the time!

They’ll have a packed lunch to school every day without a fridge. This is exactly the same.

A flask of vegetable soup, wraps with houmous and roasted veg, vegan smoked cheese cubed with olives, cherry tomatoes and cucumber in a Tupperware with some cocktail sticks to make mini kebabs, a box of pasta salad with peas, red peppers and sweetcorn, crackers and vegan cheese (I prefer the smoked Applewood)one Not all of it just ideas.

@Cherrytree86dont panic, I was only joking. Although I did go to a very posh wedding once where part of the grooms family (the posh side of the wedding) sent someone to get takeaway food whilst the photos were being taken as it took so long. They were the only people to last all night because everyone else was super drunk from not having eaten whilst drinking gallons of champagne. We were definitely envious of them!

Am I the only one who finds it odd, that a parent (who presumably knows their own children), needs to ask strangers what they should feed them on a day out………

SometimesTheIntrusiveThoughtsWin · 02/07/2026 19:57

Vegan: suggestions: Hummus sarnies. Peanut butter sarnies. Carrot and pepper sticks. Hot cross buns.

Maybe the OP isn't used to making vegan snacks that don't need refrigeration.

I can't help but want to say that the timing and food planning is surely the groom's responsibility as much as the bride's? (The groom is my relative!) At least the bride has been considerate enough to reach out and say we should bring snacks for the kids. My own wedding was a while ago now but I can still remember the eye-watering amount we were charged for child portions of everything. I genuinely don't feel like they're being crap hosts. They weren't planning to invite children to their wedding at all (which would have meant we weren't able to attend) so I appreciate them offering to make an exception for us. I'm sure the kids will have a great day, it really was just me looking for broader ideas than what my own brain could come up with (breadsticks and vegetables 😅).

Well both you and the bride sound thoughtful. But yes the kids will need food at fairly regular intervals, and vegetarian sounds like a reasonable compromise. Plenty of great ideas already on this thread. Can you practice a little bit before the event eg if child has never had peanut butter will they like it? Plan your cool box! And yes i agree with other pps: guests will be starving, take extras and flog them!!

redfishcat · 02/07/2026 20:41

I’d be taking lots of games and things for the kids to actually do too. Far too long a gap between ceremony and food, for anyone never mind small people.
i learned a long while ago to take supplies to weddings as far too many people do this batshit long gap and totally ignore normal meal times

bestbefore · 02/07/2026 20:45

Hot cross buns!

Yes, this is it! I can reassure everyone that I do manage to keep my children alive and fed on a typical day! Just wanted ideas that differ from what I usually gravitate towards given the circumstances of the day. 😊
