Help flying to Athens Thursday - varicose excema just realised should wear compression stockings

It's my partner who has excema and what I assume is varicose excema behind knees .
Large dark red patches .
We never travel and id not considered this issue .
I've told him to talk to a chemist.
But AI has put fear of god into me with talk of professional measurement and tests .
Which I can't see us having before travel.

Anyone with any advice?

No advice about that condition but perhaps go in and ask a pharmacist for advice? They will be best placed to advise and recommend medical aids

Thanks ,yes that's what I've told partner .
He's not taking it seriously though .
Google tells me major chemists can arrange measurement and advice .

He just needs to measure his legs (calf, ankle and foot) and buy flight socks, which are class I compression.

Tests are only required where class II compression and above is needed.

MissMoneyFairy · 29/06/2026 11:18

I'm sure you can buy them at the airport, which airport are you flying from?

MissMoneyFairy · 29/06/2026 11:20

Youve got 3 days till you travel, buy a pair from a chemist as others suggest, it tells you online how to measure

limetrees32 · 29/06/2026 11:21

@Sidge I'm concerned that with varicose excema he needs tests or at least professional rather than DIY assessment.
Are you sure it would be ok to self prescribe ?

@limetrees32 No he doesn't for class I.

Varicose eczema can be treated with creams which will need assessment, but for light compression pretty much anyone can wear flight socks.

Sidge · 29/06/2026 11:39

And even if he did need ABPIs you're not going to get those done in the next 2 days!

Class II hosiery is for more severe venous disease/insufficiency and leg ulceration.

limetrees32 · 29/06/2026 11:42

Ok thank you.
He has lots of prescribed emollients and steroid cream .
It's just that his legs look so bad with the dark purple areas.

How old is he? Why do you think it’s varicose eczema rather than normal eczema or psoriasis?

Varicose eczema usually starts on the feet and ankles. When blood pools in the lower legs it increases pressure in the veins causing fluid to leak into the tissues. It would be less likely to do that at knee level without starting in the ankles.

limetrees32 · 29/06/2026 12:01

@Aluna you make a good point.
Maybe it's not varicose excema and I'm just panicking .
I think he probably does have it lower , but it is v marked behind his knees.
His arms have dark patched as well ,so that's unlikely to be the blood supply isn't it ?
He's 78 , high blood pressure.( Medicated )

This is a pic of his arm
Legs are much worse .
I'm being ridiculous aren't I ?

On his legs it's not random patches like his arms but very distinct , well defined solid areas.

I do feel stupid about this , forgive me .
If it's atopic dermatitis will it aggravate it if he wears compression socks?
