I didn't realise Big in Japan by Alphaville is about a pair of heroin addicts in Germany, dreaming of a better, drug-free life.

But they don't actually go to Japan as apparently 'Big in Japan' is a slang term in the music industry for artists who can't make it big in their own countries, so pretend to have found fame elsewhere.

So to the couple in the song, it was a kind of mental escapism from their lives.
