To midges, mosquitoes, horse flies, and any other flying bitey fucker. One early morning walk and I’ve come home with three horse fly bites 😞

Any suggestions for good heavy duty insect repellents?

Me too. And I lived in oz for years. Only thing that worked was vitamin B all year round.

OvernightBloats · 27/06/2026 09:15

Some say taking Vitamin B tablets can help. Eat lots of Marmite and bananas as well.

Cover up. They can't bite you if they can't get to you!

NessCaffayy · 27/06/2026 09:31

Never heard that taking vitamin b can help!
Is that just a supplement?

Yeh so its a thing - although they have done studies that say it doesnt work. All I know is I moved to Oz and was eaten alive no matter what spray I put on - and they would get horribly infected. I struggled for a few years. Started taking Vitamin B and B1 religiously every day all year round. Within months it just stopped. I lived there for 17 years with barely being bitten and when I did they didn't get crazy infected and gross. I really suffered. So its anecdotal of course, but works for me. One of my daughters is the same and the Vit B works for her, once she stops (like me) they come back. (same red hair and pasty skin - I dont know if thats relevant but my other children and ex husband have different skin and hair and they aren't affected).

Mosquitoes love me but not midges.

DH is the opposite and could wander around marshland in Turkey and not get a single bite yet in our garden he has swarms of midges buzzing about his head.

I take antihistamines for a month or so before and during holidays abroad and I always use citrus smelling shower gel and body lotion as they aren't keen on that. DH swears by eating extra strong minutes for midges as they are attracted to us by the CO2 we're breathing out but not if its minty fresh.

My best insect repellent is dh. I don't need any on if he's near me - and what's more he doesn't believe in insect repellent, which is pretty stupid as he swells up like a balloon with bites, but good for me. 😁

Brightbluesomething · 27/06/2026 11:30

I’ve always been the same and have been badly bitten needing medical attention every time I’ve been abroad for years. Until I started taking Thiamine, vitamin B1 every day last year. It’s good for your liver and stopped me being irresistible to bugs. About £6 for 90 tablets is absolutely worth it. If you’re going away make sure it’s in your system for 3 weeks for maximum benefit. I’ve not been bitten abroad or in the UK since.

Jungle formula works for me

SourdoughSally · 27/06/2026 11:55

A lot of people recommend Avon Skin So Soft as a deterrent, but I've never tried it myself

ginasevern · 27/06/2026 13:31

@OvernightBloats "Cover up. They can't bite you if they can't get to you!"

I know that's sensible advice but honestly I could be wearing a suit of armour and I swear to god they'd find a way in.

FunnyDoginLahLahLand · 27/06/2026 13:35

Avon Skin So Soft does not work at all for me. Guess how I know. I don't know who these people are that claim it works. People who don't get bitten much I'm guessing.

High % DEET is the only thing I've tried that works, and it works brilliantly.

ThirdStorm · 27/06/2026 13:45

Mosquito milk works for me.

ScottBakula · 27/06/2026 13:58

Garlic ! But you need lots of it .
I worked at a stables so horse flys are a real pain in the arse , ( and the arm, leg, face ! )
You need to start eating it in every form you can but the rawer the better.
It got to the point in the hight of summer that we would walk around offering garlic cloves to each other like sweets .
We also mixed garlic powder in with molasses and mixed that in with all the horses feed.
We also boiled lots ( about 4lb ) of garlic in a couple of gallons of water then diluted it in a few more gallons and sprayed it on the horses, dogs , chickens, ducks and everything else ( except the cats ) that walks.
The boiled garlic would then be mixed in with bedding around stable doors and anywhere else we could think of .

Did we all stink to high heaven ? Absolutely, did we care ? Not one bit .

While you don't need to go that far , some garlic in your diet may help.
