How can we stop next door's cat coming into our house?

We have a nervous cat. Drop a feather and she jumps. Next doors cat has started chasing her in the garden but now coming into the house. Woke up this morning to find it in our bedroom and our poor cat terrified. How do we keep it away. There doesn't seem any point talking to the neighbour, our cat doesn't listen to us either.

In your house!? I’d put it under the shower before sending it back over the fence, and squirt it with the hose in the garden.

Squirt it with the hosepipe. Our cat goes all over and I know he goes in the neighbours - I’d have no issue with them giving him a good soaking if he was being a pain in the arse.

I have a big water gun which I always by the side of the patio door. Makes me feel crazy 🤪 running out in the garden with a gun, but it’s only water and there are 2 cats who bully mine in their own garden.

Spray bottle in the house, always to hand! Same sort of thing outside.

how did it get in? If through a cat flap you get one that is opened by your cats collar.

other than the neighbour not letting their cat out of the house - how could they do anything?

Liverpoolxxx · 27/06/2026 08:05

How does it get in? If it’s through a catflap upgrade to a microchip one then only your cat can get through.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 27/06/2026 08:11

Dd and family used a big water gun, their kids’ ‘super soaker’ IIRC.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 27/06/2026 08:34

Put it under the shower? Super-soaker?

Presumably through a door or window as it’s so hot at the moment?

Get Flat Cats screens for your doors and windows.

Hameth · 28/06/2026 09:08

Looks like water gun 🔫! Its door/window access

Flat cat screens so you can have the windows open without the cat getting in.
Don't keep food out all day so the cat thinks it's worth popping round for a snack.
And generally be unpleasant to it even if it ventures into your own cat's territory - supersoaker is great.

I have a cat that used to hang out in various houses round the village, upsetting people's cats in the process. I did try to point out that he only went to the houses that kept putting food out and didn't chase him off, he isn't stupid, but somehow they thought he'd stop if I gave him a stern talking to.

The best way to repel a cat is to pick it up and cuddle it. Mine can't wait to escape when I do that.

basoon · 28/06/2026 09:22

We had this and sorted it by getting a chipped cat flap. Would you consider putting one in?

Flatcats screens are inexpensive. Order a couple to try and they usually include a 20% off voucher for future orders.
