Considering laser eye surgery after starting varifocals, any recent experiences?

Hi all,

As the title says I'm considering laser eye surgery since I've started needing varifocals. I just hate wearing glasses now they have to be so deep and I can't wear contacts because I've had issues in the past with them.

I live near Southampton and have an initial consultation booked with Optical Express in August.

I know when it first came out there were issues with night vision is that still the case?

Do you mean laser surgery or lens replacement? They are 2 different things and if you wear varifocals it may be that laser surgery won’t suffice. Lens replacement is a bigger surgery and is a lot more expensive.

I've booked in for assessment to find out which. They said lens replacement is minimum £1500 an eye, and I have enough to pay more than that and was actually considering that may be the better option regardless of what they say. I just have no one around me that has had it done and I was wondering the outcome more than anything.

I've had lens replacement and it's great. The consultant did say that everyone struggles with night driving as they get older due to the glare of the lights so I do have anti glare glasses for that. She also explained that with lens replacement your eye muscles don't (can't?) contract like they did with own lenses so this might be why night driving is tricky? Either way, the procedure was quick, no bother at all and I could drive the next day ( had eyes done on different days)

I have recently had lens replacement done and generally it went well. I was -10 in both eyes and had them done together which was a bit of an experience but no pain. Due to complexity my reading vision isn’t perfect though.

It’s normal for lens replacements
to be done 1 eye at a time as, in the event of any issues, you have 1 eye still functioning. In fact it’s considered bad practice do both eyes at the same time.

I’ve had lens replacement. It was a lot more than you have been quoted though OP, it was £9k, which was for multifocal lenses. The operation was no bother. The results have been a bit mixed. For reading, and inside buildings it’s excellent, I can read the tiniest print, watch TV, see things way in the distance out of the window. Outside though it can be a bit tricky, I have problems with glare, which makes things a bit blurred, so wear sunglasses even if it’s cloudy but bright. Night times I still see big haloes, but I don’t drive so not an issue to me. Had the op about a year ago.

Thats disappointing.

@Size40Shoes A bit disappointing, but overall I’m still very pleased. I was at the point though of having 3 separate pairs of glasses with thick lenses, and as I couldn’t stand varifocals, it was all costing me a fortune and was inconvenient. Just have to remember sunglasses every time I go out!
