In feb i went self employed but get my work from a woman running her own business.
Shes 39 and extremely firey

She takes on one other person and they are cliquey to a degree. They can be quite bitchy.
Something bothered me this week. I followed the advise for a client she sent me with very specific areas to apply a medication. A client made an inappropriate comment leaving me uncomfortable. She told me i needed stronger boundaries and lied infront of other collegue saying she had never instructed me to put cream on there before claiming they never did. The other collegue did a shocked face at me. I read the notes back quite clearly telling me to do this plus the client asks.

This is the second incident.

Today ive been poorly all night and had to call in sick. I have flu like symptoms and a bad tummy. She snapped in her reply and didnt respond back. I have 2 clients of my own so almost wonder if i need to walk away. But im worried how she will react.

Im also only getting approx 3 hours a day spread mondat to friday. I feel it takes over my life because its between 9 until half 2

Advise needed.

Sounds more like youre an off the books part time employee.
As selfemployed you shouldn't be this reliant on a single client.

Basically she doesnt want to go limited. But i technically work for her but pulled in 5 hours a week of my own work

She sounds like the sort that will blast your name everywhere as 'bad' so just don't be accessible to her and get other clients.

I feel abit intimdated as i told her 2 weeks ago i was happy but now i realise its lonely and also bitchy. I dont want these worries for being unwell.

If she lied then she cant be trusted specially around safeguarding issues

id drop her asap

Doggymummar · 25/06/2026 08:40

I think you are not self employed if you have to ring in sick, surely. Bur she sounds horrid, find your own clients

Picklepicklespickle · 25/06/2026 08:41

I dont know how to word it shes already annoyed and shes very mouthy. But i feel down i want a weekday off and this bothers me long term that ill be in trouble and to worried to call in sick

You don’t ’call in sick, you say ‘I’m unavailable for these two clients today’

that’s the whole point of being self employed. Yes, she could stop giving you work if you’re unreliable but I’m guessing she needs you more as good carers/cleaners/whatever are hard to find

Branleuse · 25/06/2026 10:00

She lied about you, and will throw you under the bus rather than having your back.

I think you should take this seriously and distance yourself.

Picklepicklespickle · 25/06/2026 10:01

Do you think i should send a message later

Ithibk you should email her saying "unfortunately as I am ill these hours will need to be rescheduled. Additionally, could you let me know when you are available for a meeting next week? Due to high demand I will need to restructure the terms of my work for you."
