Colleagues ignored WFH advice now stranded in heatwave - karma.

I work in a big office in central London. Everyone lives in lots of different places obviously, but almost everyone is a significant train/ tube ride away.

Due to the heatwave our work told us to WFH where possible. But my most senior manager loves a bit of presenteeism. Hence a number of people (ie all the suck arses) came in. And, then proceeded to post/ message incessantly on internal comms demonstrating that they were in the office. Highly tiresome presenteeism considering ALL our calls were moved to Teams on our clients’ insistence.

Fast forward a few hours and ALL the tubes are fucked. As are almost all the trains. No-one can get home and they’re panicking at facing down 2-3hr bus journeys in 39 degree heat.

Serves them right for travelling against the advice of the health agency, government, TFL and the company. There was a do not travel unless essential instruction.

Of course, senior boss is alright. He got a company cab home…

Seems like the OP is happy that the gullible colleagues went into the office whilst she sunbathed "worked from home".

McSteamyorMcdreamy · Yesterday 19:26

Will you be the one bitching about bias/farouratism when those "suck arses" get promoted above you??

SP2024 · Yesterday 19:28

My employer also suggested everyone wfh. I went in every day because the office has air con and my house doesn’t! I wouldn’t be able to concentrate at home and I’ve got a deadline to meet. Luckily no issue travelling but I guess I could have been affected. It would probably still have been worth it though 🤷‍♀️ Also the office was lovely and quiet!

My son works in a theatre in the West End - the show is still running so he has to be in work. He has no alternative to the tube, which is hotter than the bowels of hell, unless he pays £50-odd for an Uber each way. Good for you that you can WFH - lots of people can’t, so they’re stuck on the London Underground in close to 40° heat. But I’m glad you’re happy that your colleagues have been inconvenienced by it.

My god you’re getting some sanctimonious replies here. I too enjoy seeing annoying people I don’t like suffering, and I’m not in the least bit sorry about that.

Serves them right
I've scant patience with performative folk
Those that just have to be in the office early.. who stay in the office until after the boss leaves
That log on at the weekend
That sent irrelevant emails at 11pm
I hate them
Especially as the rest of the office then follow and it becomes expected
Destroying work like balance
And leading to threats of ... well if you don't do it you won't get promoted
When if the same person dropped dead tomorrow, they job would be advertised before the funeral

Well yes obviously you’re going to think that
because you and the op are cut from the same cloth
ie a bit of twat

Well, I’d rather be an honest twat than disingenuously obsessed with appearing nice. I don’t believe anyone who claims never to have felt schadenfreude. You have, you just pretend you’re better than that.

And that’s how you view anyone who isn’t gleeful about someone suffering. Here’s hoping you don’t pass that nugget on to any children

But I somehow I think that is an unlikely scenario anyway. Thankful

Ah ok all becomes clear given this is your stance

Taking the piss out of work should be positively encouraged in my opinion. Work takes and expects so much of us, you bet I’m having a nap on my client’s dollar.

I stand by it! Presentee arse lickers can do what they want, I’m entitled to think they’re fools.

Although you’re not talking about presenteeism are you

you are talking about “taking the piss” 😆

lol what exactly are you insinuating? For someone who seems very concerned with being a “nice person”, I don’t think you’re being very nice here. Ironic.

Imagine thinking that’s something to be proud of, instead of a very unpleasant character trait you’d do well to keep to yourself…

Insinuating? That you don’t have kids to pass on your view on taking pleasure from people suffering and taking the piss at work .

clear enough?

but you’d gone to the effort of seeking out another thread I posted on weeks ago (weird, but you do you) so I thought you’d like to know I fully endorse my previous opinions that you saw fit to dredge up.

Well I was in London at that time and go the tube back, passing through several stations with no problems at all!

@Loveaghost I am 100% with you, work in a similar place and would have been very amused by the unusual photos then being stuck there.

if you aren’t in that kind of environment it is tricky to get the frenemy status of most colleagues

ALovelyPinkUnicorn · 24/06/2026 17:53

This, your post and the gleeful nastiness about them being stuck, what a horrible toxic place it must be. You’re honestly seeing this as ‘haha karma!’ ?
how absolutely unplanned and vindictive of you.

Yep @Loveaghost i agree with this!

Chocolateistheanswer2026 · Yesterday 20:29

Some of them may have gone to the office because their kids weren't in school and it wasn't practical to wfh.

Tbf when you have a boss like that its hard to deviate from what you know they would see as a negative.

"Unless essential" is subjective. One can argue not wanting to piss off your manager and mark your cards in some way, however small, is essential.

You sound pretty immature to be gleeful about this.

I agree. I feel bad for the workers…
