Colleagues ignored WFH advice now stranded in heatwave - karma.

I work in a big office in central London. Everyone lives in lots of different places obviously, but almost everyone is a significant train/ tube ride away.

Due to the heatwave our work told us to WFH where possible. But my most senior manager loves a bit of presenteeism. Hence a number of people (ie all the suck arses) came in. And, then proceeded to post/ message incessantly on internal comms demonstrating that they were in the office. Highly tiresome presenteeism considering ALL our calls were moved to Teams on our clients’ insistence.

Fast forward a few hours and ALL the tubes are fucked. As are almost all the trains. No-one can get home and they’re panicking at facing down 2-3hr bus journeys in 39 degree heat.

Serves them right for travelling against the advice of the health agency, government, TFL and the company. There was a do not travel unless essential instruction.

Of course, senior boss is alright. He got a company cab home…

It’s been a case of bullying the OP really. Just because people are hot and bothered and bored. It’s a shame because mumsnet is such a source of hive wisdom and advice. But it has the potential for an ugly pile on - this is one of those times,

Oh come on. OP started with a downright nasty OP.

I mean yes it's a stupid decision they made but really this is the result of a toxic culture created by the senior management who left people feeling they needed to do this.

Oh come on. OP started with a downright nasty OP.

I think it was all meant to be a tongue in cheek comment about the office wankers (every office has them) getting their comeuppance. For some reason people went a bit nuts about it. I put it down to the mad blood stirring in the heatwave. Makes people irrationally angry.

It was nasty. Tongue in cheek suggests something far more benign.

Love that stretch for you…I’m a senior director in a professional role who got promoted a year ago….

Are you an MP by any chance?
Sounds like the level of professionalism we have in the house of commons at the moment. No one who appears to be doing any work just backstabbing and slagging off their colleagues.

What a fucking weird thing to be gleeful about

Was about to comment that OP seems a lovely, supportive and compassionate workmate. Her team must feel so blessed to have her.

FlappyDappyDoo · 24/06/2026 22:28

This thread is full of workaholic suckasses.

Wibble128 · 24/06/2026 22:29

Agree with this. There are lots of reasons people might go into the office. They might feel intimidated by the manager and less secure in the jobs. They might live in flats that are hotter than the office. They might not have a suitable place to WFH. To gloat about the fact that they are at least experiencing serious discomfort and at worst getting quite ill just from trying to earn a living is awful.

And then comes "I was just obeying orders".

EastGrinstead · 24/06/2026 22:46

The OP sounds quite delusional.

It must be the heat. She would be well advised to check the 'air con' in her 'spacious house'.

Isn't it just awful what a 'senior director in a professional role' in 'quite an affluent industry' must endure these days?

Settlersa · 24/06/2026 22:51

What a load of old twaddle

GladEagle · 24/06/2026 22:57

Reasons people went in today that weren’t performative: their partner works shifts and they live in a one bedroom house, they live in a share house, they have mental health issues and are better getting out the house, they live in a rental that is hideously hot, they have meetings that are better in person, etc etc You sound quite one dimensional and lacking in understanding of managing teams

Zanatdy · 24/06/2026 23:18

It’s been well worth the travel to go into the office this week. After a horrible night, I totally forgot we were in a heatwave for 8 luxurious hours! Same again tomorrow. I’ll take a few delays.

IStillHearTheWaves · 24/06/2026 23:18

Loveaghost · 24/06/2026 18:32

Exactly. I don’t hate on most of my colleagues. They’re lovely. But this is reserved for a special breed of suck- ups who deliberately came in to ‘prove’ they were better than the rest of us. To pander to the very senior boss who loves people in the office, even if it’s literally dangerous. And he got a company cab in and home so more fool them.

You come across as really juvenile in the way you speak about being 'stuck up' 'suck arses' and 'hating on'.

Some lines have air-con - I, personally, was far more comfortable in the freezing cold office today than I would have been at home (had I been given the choice) and London didn't feel that hot. It certainly wasn't the 37° as originally forecast.

The travel sitation was unfortunate, but any old excuse for TFL.

IStillHearTheWaves · 24/06/2026 23:20

And some of the reasons for those delays had nothing to do with the heat - Liz line delays, for example, was the Heathrow end and due to flooding from the torrential rain om Monday night - most of the line was fine!

Mindtheagp · 24/06/2026 23:24

Why are all the trains delayed?

NoCommentingFromNowOn · 24/06/2026 23:41

Speaking as a non-Londoner, are the trains or tubes back to normal now?

holiholidays · 24/06/2026 23:46

no they're not.

They have been all evening.
Delays in the tube are usually measured in minutes.

I wouldn’t dream of assuming this about my colleagues if they came in? And with a boss like that I wouldn’t blame people either. This doesn’t seem very nice at all.

winterwarmer8274 · Yesterday 03:46

I went into work even though we were told we could WFH because my sister is staying with me for the month (she is visiting from overseas), and she is working at my kitchen table - the only table I have in my small flat.

We both have meetings, so can't share the table. My other option is to sit in my boiling hot bed in the dark because I can't open the curtains.

So yeah, I went into work. Nothing to do with 'sucking arse'

Oh god it’s a phrase people say as a joke. Have I walked into a parish meeting or something?

Off to eat dinner in my spacious air con house. Au revoir!

All alone no doubt

Minutes? I don’t think so! Yesterday it was hours of delay, from morning until late evening.

I think I know which firm you’re talking about. They tried to poach me a few years back. I declined because the culture you describe was very much apparent. I think people who have never worked in those type of firms just don’t get it.

You have established the firm the op works at from the fact there’s a hierarchical system @WutheringTights ?

KaleQueen · 24/06/2026 21:57

Wow. You edited to add that. I’ve read this thread and it’s one of the most spiteful ones I’ve seen on here and that’s saying something. Not from the OP btw. She’s defended herself remarkably then quite rightly not bothered engaging any further.

Edited

Does the OP not strike you as a teeny tiny bit “spiteful” @KaleQueen ?
