What to do about cleaner in this heat?

My cleaner travels from the other side of London. She’s due tomorrow. I think probably the right thing to do is tell her she doesn’t need to come and pay her anyway.

But I’m in two minds and interested in what other people are doing?

Thats a really kind thing to do

I think it's the right thing to do

RumpleDumple · 24/06/2026 07:21

Thats a really nice thing to do. She will greatly appreciate it.

I think it's the thoughtful things to do 💕

I don't have a cleaner, but if I did I'd do that in this heat. Especially in London. I'm surprised she travels across London to clean yours anyway,

ClaudiaNaughton · 24/06/2026 07:35

Mine came at 8am yesterday before heat built up

BikeRide · 24/06/2026 07:43

As a cleaner myself, pay her and give the day off, she will polish your toilet all the more shiny from now on as you've shown you care!😊

Sparrowsandbudgies · 24/06/2026 07:44

I think that would be really kind of you. I can’t imagine how awful it would be to clean a whole house in this heat after travelling across London!

BeSunnyLemonSheep · 24/06/2026 07:45

It’s hot weather. It’s not a war. I would not be giving her the day off; she still has a job to do whatever is going on outside.

backformoreofthesame · 24/06/2026 07:45

That’s kind and considerate

But it's also hot inside the houses due to the heated air.
Cleaning work is physical exercise and can be non stop for hours for a whole house.
Have some kindness today, it's not happening every week😎

She still has a job to do regardless of the weather.

My cleaner is here at the moment, got here at 7, normally does 9 - 12 today. She’s only doing light duties, quick round with the vac and mop to freshen up and a flick with the duster quick clean of bathrooms. She should be gone by 9.

she drives to get her and is only 15 minutes away so for her it’s the heat cleaning that’s the problem. Tbh I now this sounds harsh, but travel from the other side of London for a cleaning job ! I would look for a more local cleaner.

I will pay her the full amount because there’s times she goes above and beyond for me.

she also has unlimited access to refreshments!

Swearwolf · 24/06/2026 08:12

I’ve told mine not to come tomorrow. The kids’ schools are closed, we are all hiding from the sun, and it’s so hot in the house. I can’t imagine making her lug the hoover around - I’m overheating just thinking about it!

DinoLil · 24/06/2026 08:13

I've given mine the day off but paid her too.

MavisTheMonkey · 24/06/2026 08:16

I told mine not to come this week and will pay her regardless.
I am home based and couldn’t sit here and watch her struggle to clean in the heat - it just felt a bit barbaric to me!!

hairbearbunches · 24/06/2026 08:16

Advice for red heat areas is not to travel unless absolutely essential. Kind gestures grease the wheels of the world. It’s not armageddon if the house doesn’t get done this week, you maintain a good relationship by being thoroughly decent, it’s a win win.

its the heat + high humidity that is making life so difficult. Red heat alerts are not to be powered on through, they’re to take heed of and make plans accordingly.

MyWildOliveGoose · 24/06/2026 08:17

Mine asked to come earlier yesterday, which I said is absolutely fine. She arrived at 8 and usually comes at 10. She only did half the time as it was getting hot, but I paid her for the full time and offered her an iced coffee on arrival, and an ice cream when she was done.

rwalker · 24/06/2026 08:18

Give her the choice
come as normal
come and do minimal
not come at all

whilst it’s lovely having the time off they might not want it as they will have to catchup on things on there next visit and might prefer to keep on top of things and possibly have other clients in the area do does a loop and it would leave a gap in her day

Dontknowwhereisit · 24/06/2026 08:19

We gave ours the day off and like pps - we are still paying her. She also travels across London on public transport to get to us.

Alwaystired23 · 24/06/2026 08:20

I told mine not to come yesterday, but she said she wanted to. I said to help herself drinks, take as many drinks as she wanted and to leave at anytime. I would offer and say not to come to be honest.

Iliketulips · 24/06/2026 08:22

It's really kind of you, if you're still willing to pay her.

If not, suggest she comes earlier, and she won't be under pressure to complete all her duties, so can work a bit slower/take a break

MidnightPatrol · 24/06/2026 08:25

I would probably do the same

regista · 24/06/2026 08:27

I’d say you will pay anyway, and suggest she can add on a bit of extra time here and there when she comes over the coming months to make up? It means neither of you lose out. I wouldn’t be counting future minutes though.

This. I mean I might offer her the day off but I wouldn’t pay for a service I wasn’t getting. I’d leave it up to her.

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 24/06/2026 08:29

Its a generous thing to do.
