Retail workers - what is your staff discount?

Morning! I just wondered what staff discount you get? I was thinking of asking my boss for an increase in ours but don’t know if I’m being unreasonable. I work for an independent shop if that helps. Please could you share how much you get and if you work for a chain or an indie. Thanks!

When I worked for a clothing chain it was 50% off full price or 33% off sale price.

DP used to work for a bike shop that gave 50% staff discount - he could get 2 bikes a year half price and on the bike to work scheme and unlimited clothes/accessories etc. Even when it wasn't his full time job, he used to do one Saturday a month for a couple of years because the discount was so good. That was a small chain with about 5 branches.

Retail in a tourist/heritage site. 25% off in retail/ cafe. Free entry for self plus 6 friends/family to any partner site.

Worked in retail for 20 years.

  • large chain - 40% off full price, 25% off sale
  • small indie - 20% off everything
  • current role - family owned small chain - 45% off full price (6 per year) and 20% off sale or to give friends and family (12 per year)

what do you get @userAnnOnymous?

Iliketulips · 24/06/2026 06:59

Came under pharmacy, 22.5%, on brands own products, 12.5% on most other things (a few things excluded permanently). Staff double discount a few days a year.

15% in our supermarket on every thing

CeeJay81 · 24/06/2026 07:29

Supermarket - 30% own Brand, 10% Branded.

My daughter works for a high street clothing store and I believe she gets 40% discount.

ImWearingPantaloons · 24/06/2026 07:48

20% on everything.

Apparently it’s ’market leading’ but I’m not so sure….

Tallestone · 24/06/2026 07:52

I get 50 per cent discount and my partner also has 50 per cent off.

I get 25 % off which it sounds like is quite reasonable after all!! The owner works in the shop. All the staff all get paid minimum wage - whilst the owner takes several months of holiday per year whilst claiming hard times and no prospect of wage increase for any of us at any time. That’s capitalism for you though, they take the risks, they get the rewards.
