Puff the Magic Dragon

Have I been interpreting this song wrong all my life? I was always under the impression that Jackie Paper stopped coming to see Puff because he grew up but someone told me recently that I was wrong and Jackie Paper died. What is your interpretation?

Both. He got older and stopped coming then he died because dragons live far longer than humans.

The lyrics are 'Dragon lives forever, but not so little boys. Painted wings and giant's rings make way for other toys'. So I interpret that as the boy grows up and isn't a little boy any more, moving on to more grown-up toys.

That song has always had the power to make me cry every time I've ever heard it, or read the lyrics!

"Dragons live forever, but not so little boys"....

Snap. Even as a 46yo it.still.makes me cry!

I loved singing it with dd

HelenaWilson · Yesterday 23:48

He grew up.

And yes it makes me cry.

Off to YouTube.

ReleaseTheDucksOfWar · Yesterday 23:58

So glad I'm not the only one it made cry as a child!

BunfightBetty · Today 00:11

I'm not sure I can ever listen to it again, it makes me cry too much.

Mathsbabe · Today 00:12

In my defence my DS had an imaginary dragon and when I heard this for the first time in decades and he was a teenager it made me cry. I shouldn't have worried, he plays DnD and other fantasy games now and is still lovely.

HoppityBun · Today 00:14

I can’t understand why people love this song. It’s got misleadingly cheery music but it’s unutterably sad! Poor Puff 😭

AnonymityAnonymity · Today 00:15

Surely it's that he grew up?

I loved the song in my own childhood and also sang it with my DS when he was young.

I always had a soft spot for Peter Paul and Mary. Loved them singing Leaving on a jet plane.

Puff the Magic Dragon was my earworm for a good five or six years. I'd be singing or humming it to myself every single day, when I moved home after uni, I infected my Dad and he was started whistling it constantly.

Anyway, I believed that it was about him growing up and growing out of toys and dragons, however Dragons live forever and are unchanging.

LittleGreenShoots · Today 00:33

I think your friend has become confused because it says little boys don't live forever.

But it's because they change (into big boys/ men) rather than actually dying.

The next line clarifies they must still be alive as they have new interests.

Unchanging but sad…

“A dragon lives forever, but not so little boys
Painted wings and giant's rings make way for other toys
One gray night it happened, Jackie Paper came no more
And Puff, that mighty dragon, he ceased his fearless roar

His head was bent in sorrow, green scales fell like rain
Puff no longer went to play along the cherry lane
Without his lifelong friend, Puff could not be brave
So Puff, that mighty dragon, sadly slipped into his cave”

This always makes my cry too, but there was a picture book made with a happier ending, so I always try to think of this one instead:

The Belated Happy Ending:
To heal the hearts of listeners who were devastated by the original conclusion, songwriter Peter Yarrow and illustrator Eric Puybaret released a picture book version. In the final pages, an adult Jackie Paper returns to Puff's cave, but this time he brings along his own little girl, ensuring that Puff gets a second chance at friendship.

OtterLovesItsRock · Today 00:51

I was told it was about drugs

HelenaWilson · Today 00:58

I was told it was about drugs

Peter Yarrow, who wrote it, and Paul and Mary, vehemently denied that it was about drugs.

Thank goodness for that! ❤️❤️❤️

I hear my late Dad’s voice singing this to me as a little girl, to this day I cry instantly when I hear it.

KLD89 · Today 01:28

It was confirmed that it’s about the innocence of childhood/imagination and eventually, the loss of it.
We all grow up and the magic/whimsy fades.

DurinsBane · Today 01:30

Wasn’t it about smoking drugs?

TheSandgroper · Today 01:37

I’m old. I have the single.

bellabelly · Today 01:41

It's always played on Christmas Day morning, on BBC Radio 2 - Junior Choice I think it's called. I listen every year and cry my eyes out!

Beekman · Today 02:41

Isn’t it a poem that PP&M set to music?

I went to Hanalei in Hawaii to see the original Puff cliffs and it was a very moving experience but apparently it’s just coincidence that the rocks look like a sleeping dragon and the place sounds like Honalee. The author of the poem had never left New York at the time.
