Just about to book my holiday for the end of July and realised I need to renew my passport.  Should I book and risk it?

I'm usually pretty risk averse but if the standard turnaround is 3 weeks. It'll be fine. Is there any way I can find out if there are delays?

This. Get the renewal first. Every hotel in Europe requsts your passport details.

Yes when you check in. Not when you book. There’s plenty of time for the passport to arrive and be added to API

I just booked an easyJet flight for next week and they didn’t want my passport details. I guess I’ll enter them when I check in.

But not until you actually arrive.

OP I think it always says 3 weeks for turnaround. It did when we did ours earlier this year and they came back in a week.

But if there's a 1 week service it sounds like it could be worth paying extra for peace of mind so you can get on and book your holiday.

@fungibletoken and that's what I don't know - how much holidays will cost in 2-3 weeks.

DDs first adult passport is due to arrive today having sent off her expired child’s passport 2 weeks ago.

Just so you know for future reference, if the person the passport is for has disabilities that means they can’t sign or that they can’t pass the “regular” photo standards you can add letters to the application. My nephew has autism and I know SIL did this. I’m sure the info is online (and now you don’t need it for a while!) but thought I’d mention it.

Thank you, this was going to be my next move but I had one last try in the Photo Booth at the train station and we managed to get one that was accepted!

I booked with Easyjet - no need for passport numbers. I renewed in May, was maybe just over a week start to finish. Used a photo booth pic which gives you a digital code to enter.

@HakunaMafuckit I was wondering at what point I have to add passport details. I thought it was so many weeks before date of travel, rather than at the point of booking. Is that not the case?

When you check in in my experience

I have never been asked at booking. I booked 2 hotels in Marseille area yesterday, not asked for passport number

momager22 · 24/06/2026 08:27

Renew then book a last minute deal once you’ve got the passport. Might even be cheaper

Yes, but not until you arrive or check in online a day or so in advance.

I find it alarming how so many people can provide such incorrect advice with so much conviction

SlazengerTennisClub · 24/06/2026 14:27

Id renew it then book as it probably wont take long but then you have it for definite.

I applied for mine online on 14th June, they got my documents on 16th (needed to send marriage cert) and its being printed today. They keep you updated with texts if you can renew online.
