I’m worrying about the cat while I’m at work this week, usually out the house from 8.15-5.15 and don’t have a cat flap
yes I know I’m probably being ridiculous
cat tax included

We always leave a fan on for the dog in hot weather.

GreenFootstool · 21/06/2026 14:44

It'll be fine.

We installed ceiling fans in the living room for the dog 😂

ThelmaDinkley · 21/06/2026 14:44

Aww I’m the same I’m worrying about my cat He’s black and a tad big so not handling the heat well

StarPyjamas · 21/06/2026 14:45

I've got one that cuts out if the motor overheats but I'm still not sure I'd trust it to be honest.

SoScarletItWas · 21/06/2026 14:46

Mine don’t go near the fan - they won’t be helped 🤷‍♀️

Cooling mat for him to lay on? You can probably get one from a pet store today.

I wouldn’t feel comfortable leaving any electrical item running all day in a hot empty house tbh.

I have a cooling mat, he refuses to use it even when I covered it with a pillow case Confused

Fans just blow the air around they don’t actually cool it down.

RedTagAlan · 21/06/2026 14:51

Fans are fine. They are rated to run constantly. The motors are self cooling after all, they have a fan.

Just make sure you clean the blades now and then. They are easy to take apart for cleaning. Just be aware the fan blade is held on with a left hand screw knob.

Imaribenaberry · 21/06/2026 14:58

I wouldn’t leave a fan running unattended in the house. You could freeze a hot water bottle and wrap it in a damp towel, put ice cubes in the water dish, keep the curtains closed and all the internal doors open. Damp towel on the floor?

Personally, I wouldn't leave it on if I wasn't around.

When it's really hot, neither of us sleep that well, so one of us usually gets up around 4.30-5am and literally opens everything up, to get as much cooler air in as possible. When we return home, it does feel colder inside that out. Do you have any laminate or vinyl that he can have access to in the day. At some point both of mine will spread themselves out on ours when it's really hot - cooler than a carpet or cosy chair.

Forgot to say, love the photo. Is he/she all black?

Yes, open plan and the kitchen is vinyl
my home tends to stay about 5c cooler than outside

Fans just blow the air around they don’t actually cool it down.

Fans make a huge difference to how cool you feel though. The breeze causes evaporation on your skin which cools you down.

What a beautiful cat - enjoy every moment with him.
He looks very similar to my rescue cat that I lost 4 years ago.
Cats are very special.....

he was sent to me by my old boy
old boy - noisy, tiny, black fostered by a woman called Shelly
new boy - silent, giant, black, came from a rescue run by Shelly. He arrived at rescue the day my old boy was PTS Smile

So I ended up not leaving it on, opened everything early then closed up. Came home to a happy cat and a 21c indoor temp (28c outside)
