Tunbridge Wells. Just didn’t like it and everyone seemed so unfriendly.

You’ve lived a sheltered life when Tunbridge Wells is the worst place you’ve ever been!!

Settlersa · 21/06/2026 07:41

Brighton

Shoes232 · 21/06/2026 07:42

I did my teacher training in Lancaster and was placed in Morcambe and sorry to anyone from there but everyone I met was really unpleasant.

Squirrelchops1 · 21/06/2026 07:43

Bridgewater

LindorDoubleChoc · 21/06/2026 07:43

A housing estate in Plymouth called North Prospect.

I've only been north of Watford about 20 times in my entire life!

CoffeeCantata · 21/06/2026 07:43

To the pps who mentioned places in the Lake District...

I took a friend to Coniston Water once and she was visibly on edge as soon as we got out of the car. After a few minutes she asked to leave and told me she'd never been so unnerved by a place.

It's beautiful by any standard, but something got to her. I'm not really 'wooooo', but of course Donald Campbell famously died there in the 60s in his attempt at the water speed record. She didn't know this at the time.

There are some dreary and even sinister towns but it's fascinating when people have a reaction to what is usually seen as a beautiful place. I absolutely hate the moorlands around Saddleworth...but then they do have a sinister reputation which might be in many people's minds (Moors murders). Oddly I like the Yorkshire moors, so it may just be association...I don't know.

Nrtft but came on to say Blackpool and then Camber Sands!

ShowCryBrook · 21/06/2026 07:45

We stayed at the Carlton Hotel in Blackpool a few years ago, and had a good time.
The main front is very shabby, with a few exceptions and lights. we didn’t go to the funfair.
But behind the run down areas, we found a nice shopping arcade, used by local people, including M&S which I hope is still there.
And Blackpool Zoo, which is enormous, with enormous animal areas, so fields for animals, rather than small areas, and it all appeared very well run, and I hope it still is..we had a really good day there, the weather was wonderful, and I’d highly recommend it, although it was a few years since we were there.
I hadn’t even known it existed. And housing, very smart housing estates behind the slightly run down main front area.
Also stayed at another nearby large hotel and conference centre area in Blackpool, years earlier, which really altered my image of Blackpool.
I hope it’s still there and thriving.
The trams were lovely too. I’m sure there will be lovely areas, if you look for them.

I’ve heard that is dreadful

Bradford gets a bad rap but it really isn’t dreadful at all. I was born and raised there. I honestly think the people calling it dreadful are often racist bigots. It’s very multicultural and diverse which I’ve always loved and it has a lot of amazing things to offer- the Alhambra, Georges Hall, Saltaire, media museum, industrial museum, Cartwright Hall… Plus if we want to get technical, Haworth is Bradford too.

I don’t live there now but hate when it gets dragged through the mud.

Janie143 · 21/06/2026 07:47

Isle of Wight. Must have been lovely years ago but so run down now.

Brighton

I've never been and people tell me I'd love it. I really wouldn't. I don't like seaside places unless they're just quiet coves - which I love. Then they say 'Oh but it's not like a seaside resort - it's like London!' Aaarrgghh. I don't like London, so that's the nail in its coffin.
I bet it's got lots of funny little poky shops smelling of incense...and other things...selling grungy clothes, wind chimes and crystals...or am I being unfair?

I wouldn't go to Glastonbury either because I hear it's been taken over by crystal shops, hippyish places and the smell of wacky backy etc. if someone knows different - I'd be cheered up to be corrected!

Crewe Station, on a football Saturday. Hell.

We went to Blackpool zoo a couple of years back and wouldn’t go again. The wolf enclosure was nothing short of cruel for starters but also the seagulls hanging around the picnic area are vicious, kept swooping in and stealing our food constantly. It wasn’t a great day.

Flinderskleepers · 21/06/2026 07:49

Haverfordwest is a dump with 90% of the shops boarded up. I was told it was a 'quaint market town'. Hugely disappointed

Thinking the same!

Meredusoleil · 21/06/2026 07:51

Oh and also Luton, Peckham and Mitcham.

Mt563 · 21/06/2026 07:34

Look at Andrew Michael Hurley's books! Exactly this.

I’ve worked with Andrew. His depiction of Morecambe is spot on. The beach is terrifying, I wouldn’t go back there if you paid me.

Also as someone from Bradford, I’ve never felt unsafe there. I did feel unsafe recently at night walking alone through Banbury.

Portsmouth, only had to divert in to the town on the way past as needed petrol but it was really not nice

Which part were you in?

Portsmouth is a whole island with the centre (commercial road) being at the bottom.

Not really somewhere you’d divert into naturally. And most of it is lovely. There are a few extremely deprived areas though.

Beyondamountainandoverthesea · 21/06/2026 07:51

Walsall, Wednesbury, Tipton, Dudley, Birmingham - all shit holes.

dontignorejesus · 21/06/2026 07:52

Harehills

MrsPapillon · 21/06/2026 07:52

I used to have a job that necessitated visiting many different deprived areas. Blackpool (weekly), Accrington, Rhyl, Burnley, Barnsley, Blackburn, Rotherham, Mansfield, Chesterfield, Birkenhead, Rhyl, Ellesmere Port and parts of Liverpool (Bootle, Norris Green) and Manchester (Salford and Longsight).

It was a truly depressing job. I did meet lots of fabulous people though!

tiger2691 · 21/06/2026 07:53

Newport Wales, back in 2001, I believe its got worse. Oddly I quite enjoyed Pill (Pillgwenlly), the walkabout, chips and welsh gravy were memorable.

Bradford is indeed dreadful. Probably the worse demise of a once great city.

I find these threads confusing as they inevitably name places I've been to and found to be all right. Lovely Victorian architecture in Bradford, and the most impressive branch of Waterstones in the country. Incredible cathedral in Gloucester and the quayside area is interesting. And they have recently remedied the lack of a decent hotel.

That said, in spite of its beautiful cathedral, I probably wouldn't be in a hurry to go back to Peterborough. The first thing I saw on arrival there was two drunk young women fighting in the street. This was around lunchtime. A bit off-putting.

The cathedral is the only good thing about Gloucester. It’s full of druggies and the town centre is grim.
