It's dirty and angry and feels cheap and nasty. It's like it's just there to take advantage of you. If it was a person Blackpool would be Fagan.

Do you mean Fagin?

Had a lovely time at the Midland Hotel there a few years ago.
I've seen worse places!

Destiny nightclub, Glasgow, late 90s, early noughties. Terrible music, terrible atmosphere, no redeeming features whatsoever.

Scotswood in the West end of Newcastle. Awful depressing place with levels of deprivation most of us can't fathom. It's 20 years since I was there and I'd love to hear it has improved.

Also Kirkcudbright in Scotland. Stayed one night and it had real 'you are not from round here vibes'.

Surprised no one has mentioned parts of Coventry

They have!

Why is blackpool any worse than any other of the derelict seaside towns we have on these fair islands?
I mean we are awash with these kinds of places, I would have thought that at least Blackpool has some kind of personality or vibe that the ghost towns dont. Am surprised to see so many voices against it!

I don't know if it's changed in the last few years, but there's an official government deprivation index that covers every postcode area in England - approx 30,000 of them. It considers lots of different things: poverty; crime; standard of living; average household income; school grades; employment opportunities etc.

When I saw it, 9 of the 'Top' 10 most deprived areas were in Blackpool - oddly enough, positions 2-10. Number 1 has already been mentioned in this thread - Jaywick.

lavendarwillow · 21/06/2026 01:38

Hertford, there’s something about it that feels ‘off’. The town centre, the rest of it is nice but the town centre is strange. The nightlife is quite seedy, old men.

Mimimayhem18 · 21/06/2026 01:40

Skelmersdale- sent there for work on a few occasions. I met some really nice people but the whole place has just been left to go to rack and ruin, piss poor transport system too. You can’t get anywhere without a car.

Liverpools obsession with the beatles is tiresome

I always chuckle at Ed Byrne's comment on the city council renaming the airport after John Lennon: that it was ironic, because the airport was the very first place that the Beatles headed to as soon as they'd made a bit of money!

But wasdale has many mountains… pillar and yew barrow on one side, lingmell before you get to scafell pike. Scafell to the right. You said you got to Wasdale and turned back.

If one feels unnerved on a mountainside, the best thing to do is get the hell off it and repair to the nearest teashop!

Which is Chatham.Grin

Norwich - I had to live there for a year and experienced a lot of racism.
Grimsby - Miserable with bugger all to do.
Mablethorpe - The same as above.

I'm surprised that a poster said Whitby! I think that may be my favourite place within the UK! Different strokes I guess.

A family member applied to do teacher training in Norwich (looking to move there from a different part of the country) - and was specifically warned by the training body that black people (which she isn't) there frequently get stared at in the street. This was only about 25 years ago too.

Keepingittogetherstepbystep · 21/06/2026 01:45

Glastonbury give me the heebeegeebees.

Belfast had a weird vibe 1st time I went but been back and it's better.

Was in Blackpool on Thursday, it's sad what's happened there.

AWeeCupOfTeaAndAnIndividualFruitTrifle · 21/06/2026 01:49

I got really bad vibes in Stockton. We wanted to get a holiday place in a nicer area once, but we left it far too late and this house in Stockton was the only place left, so we had quite a long commute in!

It wasn't without its aesthetic historical charms, but it just felt very rough, especially in certain town-centre streets. Similar feelings to Burnley, actually - which somebody else has said.

The public transport is good, so if nothing else it's easy to get out of.

Many years ago friend and I were staying in Durham. Weather wasn't good so we just got on a bus and went for a ride. We ended up in Bishop Auckland. There was nowhere to get a cup of coffee, never mind have lunch.

WhatsOnTelly · 21/06/2026 01:52

Blackpool. We weren’t expecting much but it was awful.

A proper British response!
No one does self-deprecation better than the Brits. Well done! 👏🩷😂

Still plenty of places in the North of Scotland where if you were an ethnic minority, you'd literally be the only one in the entire town.

I know people who have lived in the UK their entire lives, but had never seen a black person in the flesh until they went to University in their late teens. It's not at all uncommon.

AWeeCupOfTeaAndAnIndividualFruitTrifle · 21/06/2026 01:57

We once decided to 'do' the 4-corners challenge in the space of 12 months: visit the places on the compass-point extremities of Great Britain.

The Lizard (South) was lovely - very picturesque, like the setting for an Enid Blyton book.
Dunnet Head (North) was bleak, but in a romantic, remote Wuthering Heights kind of way.
Ardnamurchan Point (West) was absolutely breathtaking; windy but stunning and by far the winner of the four - it felt other-worldly. The long road to get to it is also one of the most amazing routes in the whole country (4x4 recommended, though!).
Lowestoft Ness (East) has a big ugly Bird's Eye Factory, and that's the most exciting thing about it.

I remember when they released the Crap Towns of Britain book a number of years back - and they received so many complaints from people that their own towns weren't included in there that they had to do a second volume Grin
