Barrow-in-Furness. I was there with a friend a few years ago, we spent the night at the Travelodge on the outskirts of town. After we checked in, we were planning on going to find an Indian restaurant for dinner, but we were a bit knackered. I was pleased to see a Dominos in the car park, so I went to get some pizza we could eat in our room instead.

It took ages to get served, because two of the Dominos staff were out in the car park beating the shit out of each other, while the other staff cheered them on.

😂

Norwich - I had to live there for a year and experienced a lot of racism.
Grimsby - Miserable with bugger all to do.
Mablethorpe - The same as above.

I'm surprised that a poster said Whitby! I think that may be my favourite place within the UK! Different strokes I guess.

Peterlee was pretty bad. Pretty deprived.

And, like many places, it's deteriorated drastically in the past 10 years. The town centre used to be scruffy but buzzing but now it's just a shell. Even most of the charity shops have moved out.

Thornton heath

Yep! It’s a dreadful place.

ERthree · 21/06/2026 00:40

Egham, pure evilness on every corner.

Costello71 · 21/06/2026 00:40

Great Yarmouth. Grim.

Lots of areas of London are pretty grim though - Stratford being one that's been mentioned already.

Oh I know, it’s just often on here people come on and say they hate London, or Paris, making sweeping statements about the whole city.

MarxistMags · 21/06/2026 00:40

@Decacaffeinatednow We were at Oban for a long weekend 2 weeks ago.
It's one of our favorite places to go.
Unfortunately it rained every day but the scenery is outstanding.
Everyone we told, without exception, said ' I love it there ' So do we.

HelenaWilson · 21/06/2026 00:41

you’ve got all those little bungalows, full of character [at Dungeness]

E. Nesbit, Noel Coward and Derek Jarman (film director) all lived there at different times.

1dayatatime · 21/06/2026 00:42

Top 5 cities in UK for violent crime per capita of residents are:

  1. Blackpool
  2. Bradford
  3. Westminster
  4. Middlesbrough
  5. Manchester

Westminster figures (and to a degree Blackpool as well ) are skewed by large numbers of commuters / visitors to actual residents

Crewe

@HelenaWilson if that’s a portmerion reference I'm afraid i don’t understand it 😂

How can you not know one of the two things there is to know about Portmerion?

Think it sounds amazing, I'd never heard of it but ironically off the back of this thread I'm going to visit 🙃

It’s definitely worth a trip. Paul O Grady did a series about Kent a couple of years before his death and he visited there. There’s also a Norman church on the way in, which is quite special if you like that sort of thing. And the Pilot is partly built out of an old Spanish shipwreck (it sounds more exciting than it is, tbf). I forgot that they’ve also got lakes they do water sports on. They are right next to the power station, so you may come out with super powers or an extra ear, but the seafood makes up for it! Definitely do the Pilot or the shacks for lunch, the catches will be from that day so couldn’t get any fresher. And if you’ve got room for pudding, head past the kite surfers towards Greatstone, where you will find Reynolds ice cream. They used to be just a van, but they have actual premises now. Then carry on through Dymchurch, Hythe and Sandgate until you get to Folkestone, where you can have a sauna experience on the beach then a walk along the Harbour Arm either to the Champagne bar at the end, or a free movie showing with a cocktail.

Crewe. Booked overnight accommodation there to break a drive from Scotland to SE. Acomm was apparently "central" and had parking in part of the station car park. But there seemed to be no other "centre". Accommodation was a (badly) converted office block. Half the furniture in our apartment was old office desks, chairs, blinds etc. Block was clearly used as a bail hotel or similar - there were signs in the corridors not to inject drugs in communal areas etc.

Took kids for a walk and found a park so they could have a play. A group of youths turned up with a pit bull they were winding up and getting to chase/bite each other. We hurriedly left. We did have an amazing curry dinner at a place with lovely waiters but that was not enough for me to ever want to visit Crewe again.

Mansfield, Falkirk, kirkliston.

I know this isn't in the same league as shit run down cities, but... Scafell Pike. We went in from Wasdale Head and I just got such a terrible sense of foreboding, I put up with it for about an hour then I had to leave. It just felt... malevolent? I've never felt like that outside of nightmares before. As soon as we got on the road again I started to feel better.

It’s bleak up there at times. Not for the faint hearted. Or unseasoned walkers.

Nevermind31 · 21/06/2026 00:46

Sheffield

Whaaaat?!! Why? Sheffield is gorgeous.

IdenticalHandTwin · 21/06/2026 00:47

Frinchley, once such a beautiful town. Now all that's left are nail bars, Turkish barbers and Home Bargains. Waitrose was taken over by Iceland.

Noce · 21/06/2026 00:47

WhatterySquash · 20/06/2026 23:58

Methil in Fife. I got lost on the way somewhere with two young kids in the car and we ended up going round and round in Methil and taking wrong turnings. Ugh it was beyond grim. I started to feel like I was in some king of dystopian sci-fi film and would never get out. Even the name sounds dodgy.

I bet the only reason it’s not winning the thread is hardly anyone has ever been there.

It’s not that far from me, and I still wouldn’t go. I know someone from there, and from what I know about them and their associates: it’s not somewhere I’d want to be

Ed Sheeran has a place there now, but he drinks in one of the other local pubs I can’t remember the name of.

Stirling? Really? Castle, Wallace Monument, Historic Old Town, River, and the backdrop of the Ochil Hills.
