I don't generally like to use the term 'inbred', but there is definitely a 'Norfolk look'.

Ouch 😅

Yes. This. Birmingham was the closest big city for me growing up as well and it was great. It felt like the city was "on the up"... VERY MUCH NOT ANYMORE

It always had a pride and leant into the "second city" thing. Like you said, a city on the up.

It just felt like it's given up now.

We went to North Wales for a wedding once and had a day to go off and explore. We went to Beddgelert because I wanted to see the memorial to Gelert.

I thought it was a lovely village, surrounded by beautiful countryside.

I also like Portmeirion and Brighton, both of which have been mentioned.

On the other hand, I have never been to Blackpool and, from everything I have seen and read about it, have absolutely no intention of ever going.

DP quite often goes in the summer because he loves Rebellion, the punk festival. But he says that the town is a shithole.

Edited

North Wales is beautiful ❤️ All of it.

Recently, Blackpool. Really quite shocked by the deprivation if you went anywhere other than the seafront main tourist areas. Stayed there till evening thinking we might find somewhere for an evening meal but felt unsafe and decided to leave.

Was there last year, and was really horrified by how abandoned so much of it was

GoneWithTHeWindJammers · 21/06/2026 00:08

Anyone remember "Sluffs" nightclub in Slough?

Parts of Hartlepool have that vibe, particularly the Headland and all the industrial area around Seaton Carew. One of the bus routes down to Middlesbrough takes you past acres and acres of glistening pipeline and it's weirdly spectacular to look at.

I find aberdeens industrial port vibe very beautiful

Birmingham. My friend and I were ready to smash wine bottles at two men who followed us into our aparthotel (turns out it had no night reception!). I've always lived in cities but never had to do that before.

I agree with a lot of mentions on here although my job relocated me to Blackpool for 6 months and I have to say, there are some really positive things about Blackpool. Some fabulous restaurants and Stanley park is gorgeous. There are some lovely period properties as well.

Not necessarily the worst but I visited Loughborough for work once and I thought it was a total dump. I genuinely was quite shocked that it attracted so many students as I felt like there couldn’t have been anywhere less exciting to be as an 18 year old - I wonder if it would attract any students at all if it wasn’t for the sports reputation.

@WhatterySquash

Methil is particularly striking and incongruent, because for the most part that area of Fife is lovely, and even the more tired places have a little charm of their own. But Methil is just, well, nope.

Totally, one of the lovely East Neuk villages was where we were headed. Eastern coastal Fife is nice, the nice bit is the exception though.

Cumbernauld is also an absolute dump.

Luvvlyjubbly · 21/06/2026 00:15

Basingstoke , used to visit there as a rep, soulless , full of industrial estates , Grimsby ….truly Grim and Stoke .
saw a couple of votesfor Portsmouth, I live here and it’s getting better . The sea front has been vastly improved, millions spent , and lots of regeneration going on Still dire in parts though esp town centre

Whataflippincircus · 20/06/2026 23:15

Dungeness. Famous for being the UK's only officially classified desert, it features a stark shingle landscape dotted with abandoned fishing boats, distinctive wooden houses, two lighthouses, and the imposing Dungeness nuclear power stations. I felt really depressed when I went there.

It goes to show how places affect people differently, I love it there.

I mean, the power station is a bit of a blot on the landscape, admittedly, but otherwise you’ve got all those little bungalows, full of character (and hugely expensive now) wild flowers randomly growing on the shingle, a couple of fish shacks that have won awards for their food, the Pilot, which does the best cod in Kent and the best tartare sauce anywhere (chips are a bit disappointing though). You can sit in their pub garden of an evening, cooling down with the breeze and watching the kite surfers on the beach down the road. You’ve got the RSPB sanctuary, those giant sound bowl things, the nature reserve, alpaca walking just down the road and mini steam trains going past every hour in the summer. It’s so grounding.

Melancholyflower · 21/06/2026 00:16

Anyone secretly pleased that where they live hasn't come up (yet)? Though I'm surprised nobody has said London yet , as if all of it could be awful.
