What could Andy Burnham do as PM to improve daily life?

There are some negative threads about Andy Burnham this morning so I wanted to have something a bit more positive and look at what he could do, if he becomes PM, to help improve our daily lives.

For me it would be:

  • re-nationalise water and utility companies and trains
  • reverse the national insurance hike for businesses so they can start hiring again and do more to support small businesses in general
  • a one off wealth tax to add funding to the defence budget
  • reform the student loans system, improve access to apprenticeship and also do more to help job seekers over 50.

Sack Ed Miliban immediately.

LauraNorda · 19/06/2026 08:05

Call an instant general election.

Duvetdayneeded · 19/06/2026 08:05

What on earth is positive about him… honestly… what were voters thinking!!

He hasn’t been voted in yet.

Resign

Duvetdayneeded · 19/06/2026 08:08

Sack miliband.
sack Sadiq Khan.
reduce welfare bill and stop lazy shits choosing not to work
stop England subsiding wales and Scotland and NI with free prescriptions, free adult care, free university

rivalsbinge · 19/06/2026 08:09

Get rid of Rachel reeveeeeees and the other idiots, I get he’s a giant plank as well but they really need some qualified people in that party fast before this county goes bust.

NeedingCoffee · 19/06/2026 08:11

I agree with almost all your ideas OP, but we also need to add "commit to reforming the triple lock". We can't afford it. Pensions need to rise with wages or CPI inflation, not the higher of both, and not by 2.5% when wages/inflation are much lower. No one is talking about taking money away from pensioners but their future rises need to be in line with the working people who pay (directly) for them.

Seasidecatlady · 19/06/2026 08:11

Yes, finally seeing the back of Rachel Reeves, who is totally incompetent as far as I am concerned, would be a big plus!

Hijacked by Reform voters again I see!

Pollqueen · 19/06/2026 08:13

It is rumored that Milliband is being lined up for Chancellor. Happy times ahead, if so

Why do you care so much about Sadiq Khan given you clearly don’t live in London and are completely unaffected by his mayoralty?

Yes I should have added pensions reform.

I would also like to see pensions means tested because I don't see why people with big private pension provisions should get a state pension.

I would also do the same for child benefit and the winter fuel allowance.

Basically there should always be a safety net but it should only apply to those who really need it.

Yes to the state pension being means tested, it takes up the largest percentage of the welfare bill and can’t be afforded anymore. Time to reform it completely.

scalt · 19/06/2026 08:16

Fast track the prosecutions of Boris Johnson and Paula Vennels, move them a step closer to prison. (Impossible, I know.)

VivienneDelacroix · 19/06/2026 08:17

I agree with all of your suggestions, OP.
I'd add starting the process to overhaul the education system, starting with the curriculum.

Upstartled · 19/06/2026 08:18

Increase tax thresholds and allow people to lean into the kind of ambition and risk that can grow the economy instead of demoralising them into work-life balance apathy.

Axe stamp duty on primary residence so that we can get people into the most suitable housing stock and allow people to move to the jobs that fit their skill sets without a tax penalty.

Iocanepowder · 19/06/2026 08:18

Not sure, i disagree with a couple of your points tbh.

Renationalising water will make the situation even worse than it already is.

And i think it’s young people that need support with the job market rather than over 50s.

Lentilcakes · 19/06/2026 08:18

There’s no way he’s going to bring down NIC - what makes you think that? We run a small business and the new NIC and min wage has made a big difference to us.
He’s further left than Keir so good luck to those who think he’ll be good for business.
Ive voted Labour all my life but I’ll prob vote Tory if things don’t improve. We are in a very marginal Tory/Labour constituency (which is currently Labour).

Melom · 19/06/2026 08:20

Sort out the line between Leeds and Manchester. Expand apprenticeships massively. Get the shit out of the rivers. Seed fund British businesses out of British universities so they stop having to go cap in hand to the US.

PermanentTemporary · 19/06/2026 08:21

Appoint Starmer as foreign secretary, keep Miliband and Reeves. Energise and unify.

You can support both young people and older people when it comes to employment.

Ageism in the workplace is a major issue.

I don't see how worse the situation could be for water when we have poo in our rivers and seas, high bills and fat cat bosses...

You want him to sack an elected mayor? Who has nothing to do with Parliament?
