Warsaw - holiday recommendations

We (2 adults) are going on holiday this year, flying to Berlin, visiting Leipzig and Dresden and then taking the train to Warsaw, where we are flying out of 3 days later. It is a kind of mini-interrail, but without the actual interrail ticket. We know the German destinations, but neither of us knows a lot about Warsaw. Anyone on here got any good recommendations? We are fairly easy-going - we like museums (but not too long there), architecture, parks, the usual stuff. We want enough time to sit and have coffee and cake, not rushing about everywhere. Also, nice restaurant recommendations are very welcome. Thank you for your help!

Ooh a lovely trip to plan! This is off the top of my head, I haven’t been for ages but lived there for a while ages ago.

  1. the old town (Stare Miasto) which was bombed and recreated post war. Some great traditional tourist restaurants.
  2. tomb of the unknown soldier
  3. łaszenki palace in the park (an old school palace and art gallery in a lovely park
  4. the palace of culture (communist era imposition from Russia, oppressive architecture and a beautiful view from the top
  5. the museum of the Warsaw uprising - this explains the resistance and heroism of the population which led to the city being 90% bombed by the fascists. I last went about ten years ago and it was really good.
  6. the Jewish memorial in the Jewish quarter, which was used as a holding pen/ghetto before people were sent to concentration camps.
  7. E. Wedel used to have a hot chocolate cafe which was lovely
  8. pierogi and vodka!

have fun x

It's a long way from Warsaw to Auschwitz, Krakow is very close though

Enjoy its a beautiful city

the old town square is lovely
there is a vodka museum which is good. Recommend booking it in advance
there are music concerts on near main church regularly which is lovely
great food place and bars just wander around and most are high rated on Tripadvisor that I would recommend

have fun

Thank you, I will check those places out!

I have been to Auschwitz a few times. It is near Krakow (which I have also been to and it is very nice). I would have thought it was quite a long trip from Warsaw?

Are you aware they are about 200 miles apart?

Johntaylorschin · 18/06/2026 21:05

We went to a museum but didn’t go inside, DH spent an hour walking around the car park area which was full of old tanks and planes and didn’t feel the need to go inside, the museum of the Warsaw Uprising was really interesting though and the story behind the Palace of Culture. There is also a very hands on science museum, the river boat cruise we took wasn’t great though.

I have been reading about the Museum of Culture and the museum of the Warsaw uprising. They both are definitely on the list. Has anyone been to the Jewish museum?

Thats about 2-3hours by train from Warsaw

Personally, I found Warsaw quite underwhelming. The Jewish museum is very good, we went up the giant tower thing and did the speedboat on the river. Didn't help that the weather was rubbish.
Much preferred Krakow and Gdansk. They are much prettier, more walkable and have more to do.
