Entitled behaviour of some dog owners

Jsonwbia · 16/06/2026 13:53

I am on holiday in the UK. I accept that the area I am in is popular with dog owners and I accept the presence of dogs, but the sheer number of them in some spaces and the thoughtless behaviour of some dog owners is really starting to grate.
I'm in a cafe - restaurant place for lunch. Most other people in here have their dogs with them...fine. But some people have brought in clearly reactive dogs which are intermittently barking loudly at each other, whining, flying into a rage when other dogs go past their tables and growling. It makes me jump out of my skin when they loudly go off and set a baby off crying in shock. There is outside seating available and it's quite a nice day so why they can't sit outside I don't know.
Add to that, dogs sitting on the seats, being allowed to reach too far on their leads making them a trip hazard, and sniffing around my legs as they go past on leads with owners making no attempt to remedy any of this.
The staff are young and very polite and seem a bit ill equipped to deal with any of this.
I'm not out to spoil anyone's day so am keeping quiet but it is not relaxing. I feel like I'm in a minority these days though with not finding this enjoyable.

Dog owners feel like they own and are primarily entitled to every outdoor space, I am not sure why it doesn't occur to them that people might not be keen on dogs but like walking or running or using parks. The look of disgust when I told a man to stop letting his dog wee on playground equipment. Or when big groups of dog owners stand chatting on footpaths and make
absolutely no attempt to move for other users

I've looked it up in my city - there is only one café that doesn't allow dogs. (assistance dogs fair enough).

Dogs aren't allowed in
M&S cafes
John Lewis Cafes
Any supermarket cafes
Wetherspoons
McDonalds
Greggs
Travel Lodge Cafes
The Ivy
Museum and art gallery cafes

Are there none of those in your city?

Don’t you have rubbish bins where you live?

Yes, we do. But the dog shit bins are often overflowing. God they stink. I must admit that I wouldn’t want to be the poor soul who has to empty them. Maybe the council can’t find anyone to do it. I realise that dog owners could put their shit bags in other bins. Which makes it all the more infuriating that they hang up their shitty ornaments on trees and fences.

Still, decorating the neighbourhood with crap filled bags is marginally better than the many dog owners who leave the products of their dogs’ bowels on the pavements and playing fields.

Regarding the bins / I have thought that maybe dog owners should pay some sort of dog owner tax since cleaning up dog mess off pavements and from the council bins must be an extra expense for the local councils.

I don’t think this would have been an issue say 10 years ago or so, but this insane level of dog ownership means this dog poop is going somewhere and it’s not the toilet!! 😅

I cannot stand dogs everywhere. Im allergic to them and my options of venturing out are getting smaller and smaller from restaurants, cafes, shops! Hate it!

I agree re figs. They need to be managed and if they create a nuisance they should leave.
However I think the same about small children who can also be loud and create a mess and spoil your meal / coffee.
i was once in a country pub where a mum decided to change her baby’s nappy at the table. And the mess left behind by toddlers who are allowed to
play with food and condiments is awful.

the principle is clear up after yourself, dog or children, and don’t create a noise that bothers others.

Are you really comparing a child to a dog? Really?

Dog poo bins are just bins and emptied and treated the same as the other litter bins. Most litter bins are fine to put dog poo in anyway.
One of the poo bins in my local park gets regularly filled with wine bottles.

Not had one of these for awhile.

Yeah, must be at least 10 minutes 🤣🤣

if it's such a nice day & no dogs are out there, wonder why the OP didn't just go outside?!

oh because then she might have enjoyed her lunch instead of griping on here!!

WeatherDependant · 16/06/2026 20:49

Seeing as people readily compare children to dogs, can we equally compare a child to any animal? So, some animals are kept on a farm , should we keep some children on a farm likewise? Or , say, we sometimes put down poison for rodents should be do the same for children?

just curious why children and dogs are comparable species? Maybe I’m being totally dense

They are comparing anti-social behaviour. Unless you think changing a nappy on a table in a cafe is acceptable.

There isn't an Ivy.
I do not frequent Wetherspoons, Greggs or McDonald's. There is a Travelodge near the motorway exit. I honestly wouldn't go there.
There is only a very small café at my local Waitrose.
I live in a beautiful leafy suburb. Within walking distance or a short drive - no, there are no dog free cafes.
Thank you for trying to help with those suggestions, though.

Harhar · 16/06/2026 20:50

I think it’s more comparing one potential nuisance to another. Could also be drunk people, smokers, people who litter etc. The common denominator is shit humans.

Here we go...

They're sharing the trainers nicely 🥰

worcesterpear · 16/06/2026 20:53

Let me guess you were in the Lake District? The majority of owners and their dogs are fine, but there is a significant minority who think the world revolves around them and their dog. They are often a bit thick.

Oh yes, they're very well behaved. They were taught to share from a young age 🤣

Screamingabdabz · 16/06/2026 14:07

As per usual the predictable ‘fuck you’ from dog owners who don’t give a flying shit. Only their animals matter. 🙄

Dogs should not be in eating establishments. It’s disgusting.

Edited

No it's not disgusting! They're no sharing your plate.
(sadly NOT a dog owner)

So there are lots of dog free cafes in your city but you choose not to go in them.

cramptramp · 16/06/2026 21:01

I don’t hate dogs. I like dogs that are treated like dogs and not dragged around bored shitless into cafes because that’s what their selfish owners want to do.

That is true, because they are not the kind of places I would wish to go to, don't exist in my city, or are too far.
My choice.
Thank you again for your input. 🙏

My dog loved going into cafes, and my mum's dog does too. We are going in one tomorrow. He gets fuss from the staff and given treats. It is part of his walk.
He is not being dragged there. He actually drags us there! They have started selling dog ice cream, so I know he is going to enjoy his visit even more.
Dog owners tend to know what their own dogs do and do not like.

I suppose leafy suburbs are prime dog owning territory.
Dog friendly cafes come with the deal.

Our council emptied standard public bins have a written on them “suitable for dog waste” or something similar. Our council employees are more robust than yours! 🤣
I do agree hanging “crap filled bags” on trees/bushes/fence posts is a disgusting habit.
Im not saying all dog and their owners and models of behaviour but I don’t think you should tar all dogs and their owners with the same brush. I work hard to have well behaved dogs and I pick up their poo and don’t want them to annoy other people in particular in public spaces like cafes. Most of my friends with dogs have the same approach. The problem is you can’t help but notice the yapping dog in the cafe and you probably don’t notice the majority of dogs who are lying quietly under the table.

It is like cyclists. People only tend to notice and mention the bad ones.

If you tell us whereabouts you are holidaying in the UK we can provide a list of dog free venues for you. There are literally millions of places where dogs are not allowed.

If you read my posts you will see that I am not objecting to all dogs. Nor do I want to limit myself to dogless venues, which by all accounts seem very few hereabouts. I just want less dog aggro and annoyance where there are dogs. Why should I have to go out of my way to go to dog free venues just to avoid poor dog related behaviour?

We have a local cafe where the owner divvies out treats to all dogs as soon as you get in the door and then constantly feeds treats whilst your drinking your coffee. My dogs get so excited when the car pulls up in the car park they can’t get inside fast enough.
