Am I allergic to my (annoyingly expensive) vibrator??

Silicooooh · 15/06/2026 20:07

NCd for this because it doesn't quite chime with my normal Mumsnet contributions re politics.

A month or so ago my best friend in the entire world (my 15 year old bullet vibrator) died after a decade and a half of faithful service. I bought a replacement which arrived a fortnight ago. I decided to treat myself and spent nearly £100. But based on fifteen years and twice a week I reckoned it was worth it on a per use basis!

The first time I used it, heaven occurred as desired, but then the next day my bits felt like they'd done ten rounds with Tyson Fury (and not in any kind of good way). They were tender and slightly swollen and it felt like they were bruised. I wondered if it was a coincidence cos I had been on a bike ride a couple of days before.

I used it again yesterday. And today the same problems have arisen. And there was no bike ride this time!

WTF?! It is made of the same material as my old one (a silicone thing). I cleaned it before use and then afterwards too. Obviously this isn't the kind of thing I can return (is it?!). Am I allergic to it?! I would be gutted if so cos it was a lot of money! Has anyone had this issue? Do I just need to get used to it?!

Sorry I have no relevant experience so am pretty useless here. Can I ask what the political views of women who use vibrators are likely to be please?

Quite clearly she means she usually posts intellectual political posts and this is a post she wouldn't necessarily want following that username irrelevant of her political leanings.

OP erm... Is this more powerful than your previous bestie?

Labour voters use ones that look like they'll do the job but rapidly turn out to be pretty disappointing.

Reform voters use ones that promise easy satisfaction but turn out to just be cheap tat that you immediately regret trusting.

Conservative voters keep buying the same ones over and over again, and act surprised when they don't work.

Allergies can develop at any time. I developed a seafood allergy in my 30s. I fucking hate it.

Lifelover16 · 15/06/2026 20:19

Is there any latex involved? Latex can cause allergy.

You should be proud of this oeuvre ! Why hide it ?.

I don’t know, but I bought one of those lemon things and it gives me cystitis so have had to stop using it!

Not noticeably so. There is no undue vigour involved and it's done in five minutes. Odd.

No latex that I am aware of.

Start with the toy cleaner and any lubricant as the likely suspects.

BunnyOnTheOnion · 15/06/2026 20:24

Try it with a condom/ dental dam and see if that stops the reaction? If it does you can blame the material it is made of, good quality, medical grade silicon shouldn't cause a reaction. Many brands will offer a satisfaction guarantee, I'd ask for a refund based on inferior materials.

FateAmenableToChange · 15/06/2026 20:25

Causation bias? Its been a month, perhaps something else has caused the fanjo sensitivity in the meantime. Perimeno maybe, try some estrogen cream and see if that helps. Or could it be thrush, or of that ilk?

Jellybunny98 · 15/06/2026 20:26

If your last one was 15 years old could it just be that this one is stronger, and so it’s a bit “harder” than you were used to?

I did wonder that with the bike ride thing. Just seems to much of a coincidence to have happened twice. I am a bit young for perimenopause. I have been trying to work out if anything else has happened but I can't think of anything 🤷‍♀️

That is possible I suppose. Whilst it is the same material it doesn't quite feel the same.

I wonder though because (thank god for NC...) the only part of my body it touches for any length of time is my clitoris and yet this affects my whole vulva area 🫣. I suppose it must have touched that area a bit, but not for long. And there has been no reaction on the hand that was holding it either.

Maybe check the small print for the testing process?? !! If it was a bargain price I could ponder if the staff test them and you have chlamydia!!.
*likely just new sensation reaction..
Try use a condom?

Ilovemyshed · 15/06/2026 20:35

FWIW OP maybe try using it wrapped in clingfilm and see if you have a reacrion afterwards?

This is a good idea, thank you. It's not the right shape for a condom 😬 but cling film might work.

If only my dear departed grandmother could see me wrapping a vibrator in cling film to get to the bottom of my sore genitals. She'd be so proud.

Maybe some lube to help?

I don't think that's the issue. It's not a friction soreness, and I make sure it is naturally lubricated as required. I think it's some kind of allergic reaction or reaction to the stimulation itself but I struggle to see why as the material is supposed to be the same, and I can feel no difference in how it actually feels during use. Like I say above, it's pretty quick, and it's being used as designed. There's no penetration or anything that should cause bruising or irritation.

I thought it could potentially be to do with my cycle but there was over a week in between uses (with a period in between). And it's certainly not to do with overuse because I used my old one every few days and this one has only been used twice in a fortnight.

YABU to not say that you've name changed because it doesn't quite vibe with your normal Mumsnet contributions.

Other than that, you're making me think about some similar issues I had that I never considered were allergy related and just that the thing was too intense!
