Am I allergic to my (annoyingly expensive) vibrator??

NCd for this because it doesn't quite chime with my normal Mumsnet contributions re politics.

A month or so ago my best friend in the entire world (my 15 year old bullet vibrator) died after a decade and a half of faithful service. I bought a replacement which arrived a fortnight ago. I decided to treat myself and spent nearly £100. But based on fifteen years and twice a week I reckoned it was worth it on a per use basis!

The first time I used it, heaven occurred as desired, but then the next day my bits felt like they'd done ten rounds with Tyson Fury (and not in any kind of good way). They were tender and slightly swollen and it felt like they were bruised. I wondered if it was a coincidence cos I had been on a bike ride a couple of days before.

I used it again yesterday. And today the same problems have arisen. And there was no bike ride this time!

WTF?! It is made of the same material as my old one (a silicone thing). I cleaned it before use and then afterwards too. Obviously this isn't the kind of thing I can return (is it?!). Am I allergic to it?! I would be gutted if so cos it was a lot of money! Has anyone had this issue? Do I just need to get used to it?!

Oh goody. We haven't had a vagina-related thread for ages. Hmm

PenelopeJoanSterling · 16/06/2026 00:37

the magic wand / hitachi ones are very very good, as for your question could it be different strengths and the muscles adjusting ?

Labour voters use ones that look like they'll do the job but rapidly turn out to be pretty disappointing.

Reform voters use ones that promise easy satisfaction but turn out to just be cheap tat that you immediately regret trusting.

Conservative voters keep buying the same ones over and over again, and act surprised when they don't work.

😂

ShakyBake · 16/06/2026 01:28

Is it mains powered as in a wand? Possibly too much power?

GOATYOAT · 16/06/2026 01:52

Love the political comments. Are you as amusing on the political boards?

Babyboomer50 · 16/06/2026 02:24

Could it be the product you are using to clean it with ? I had a bit of a reaction after using liquid soap. Remember that your hands are used to all sorts of cleaning products but your vaginal area is much more tender and is not .

That was another thought I had. I used the stuff that it came with, but that was water based? Hmm. And whilst I did when it first came (five minutes before I did, snort) and then again afterwards, I didn't clean it before the second use (maybe that makes me silly but it had just been in my drawer, and I didn't clean the old one every time for that same reason, with no ill effects).

Anyway, much less tender in the shower just now, same as last time again. It's like a 24hr reaction.

There's lots of different types of silicone and you could be having an allergic reaction to an additive that's in your new toy that's not in the old.

Hmm. I hope not. And if it is indeed that, can I return it?! I suspect not, which would be highly annoying as it was a lot of money!

I would email them and see what they say

I think an allergic reaction is a valid reason for returning a product.

Hopefully! I guess if I was the manufacturer (who, to be fair, are well known for these kinds of products) I'd not take kindly to such returns.

It's not clear online but there is a phone number so if I'm feeling brave I might ring up and ask.

Sorry I have no relevant experience so am pretty useless here. Can I ask what the political views of women who use vibrators are likely to be please?

What a pointless reply!

Iamacatslave · 16/06/2026 11:01

Have you read the instructions?

I must confess that I immediately binned all the packaging and instructions and everything apart from the thing itself and the storage bag. But I am somewhat of an experienced user, so to speak, so didn't think I'd need to read instructions! I don't think it requires specialist care.

Green voters use ones that run on wind power and make your boobs bigger through the power of thought alone.

I knew it made sense to vote green !

PotofPens1 · 16/06/2026 11:24

Have tried applying it to the, um, area without turning it on? Might help you figure out if it's the material or the motion.

I don't think I'd be able to resist turning it on if it was down there! And more to the point I'm not going to risk an allergic reaction without at least getting the joy!

It really isn't. It's just well made and looks lovely (and is sadly made of something my skin may well disagree with). Basically just a bullet in designer clothes!

@Silicooooh can you also add what vibrators the Reclaim party voters use?.and also those wacky bods in the Monster Raving LOoney party? Thanks in advance 🙂

StrawberryMatchaLatte · 16/06/2026 12:19

If it's a wand, they can be very high powered and if used for an extended period of time can cause irritation and numbness. Also if it's got ridges on the head it can feel uncomfortable. Try a lower setting, using through clothes or for shorter bursts. If none of that helps then get a different one.
