Cape Verd

I've never had a reason to say Cape Verde out loud and have never been there but if I ever read it, I would pronounce it in my head as Cape Verd-ee like bona fide.

No idea why as now I think of it merde in French is just ends with a d.

For the first time, I heard it said today on the BBC (who have a whole pronunciation department so it must be right) in relation to the football and I learnt it's just pronounced as Cape Verd. No eee sound on the end.

Cape Verde.

Feeling a bit stupid.

Matt and molly?? 😄😄

Yeah i thought it was cape verdé, like beyonce

But it makes sense that its verde like merde I suppose

But then, theyre Portuguese i thought it might be ver-dgee :-S

Fluboben · 15/06/2026 17:16

I also thought it was verd-ay. I probably thought I was very sophisticated saying it, too. I feel foolish now 😬.

YES! - Verde - like beyonce. That's a better way of describing what I meant. An -ay sound.

Glad I'm not the only one.

It's Cabo Verde in Portuguese isn't it?

I don't know the rules of Portuguese pronunciation but it could well be Cape Verd. Or Cabo Verd

It's like Jose Mourinho again. People pronounced his name Hose Mourinho, not accounting for the fact that he is Portuguese, not Spanish.

amylou8 · 15/06/2026 17:29

It's said Cape Verd isn't it, with no e or ay sound on the end?

Ladybyrd · 15/06/2026 17:32

My partner is Portuguese and says Vinho verd with hard D.
