If your sons have moustaches and mullets ...

... are you, like me, longing for them to go out of fashion? My eldest (21) has had his mo since last Movember and my youngest (19) grew his a short while later. The mullets have been with us for a few months too. I guess some people must find them attractive, but I'm not in that camp and would love to have my clean-cut boys back.🙂

OP posts:

Ds has a mullet and have had for 3-4years now.

His girlfriend likes it

I have accepted he has a different fashion sense to me.

TallSturdyGirls · 15/06/2026 07:50

If someone had told me my kids would have mullets when I was a child I would have considered better contraception.
2 of them do and weirdly I think they look good.
My 13 year old self is still cringing inside though.

Tillow4ever · 15/06/2026 07:55

The moustaches are the worst in my opinion. I just don’t get why it’s fashionable, never at any point in my life have I thought it looked attractive on someone, so I don’t even think it’s about me getting old.

It’s their body so they can do what they like…. But I can’t wait for clean shaven etc to be back “in” fashion. The funniest thing about it all is that about 5 years ago they saw a photo of their Dad at around 20 with a moustache and they thought it was hilarious and that it looked awful. I remember them ripping the piss for ages. And now my eldest looks just like him at the same age 🤣

W0tnow · 15/06/2026 07:59

They look awful but I love them. I love that they experiment with different looks. I’m a child of the 80s. I remember the boys and their flat tops, and pastel coloured knitwear.

Slimtoddy · 15/06/2026 08:01

Hmmm. My eldest every so often will grow a beard. Then he shaves it off. I don't mind but I do think if you are going to have facial hair you need to groom it. I have thought to myself that facial hair must be easier than shaving even with the need for grooming.

Randomchat · 15/06/2026 08:03

My 13 yr old has a mullet. He's got gorgeous curly hair and I think it looks great. He's showing his personality and is brave enough to experiment. Good for him. He doesn't quite have a moustache yet

Thingcanonlygetbetter · 15/06/2026 08:09

I get you OP, totally ridiculous looking in my opinion. Mine has a ridiculous hair cut at the minute. He recently went to the barber for a trim and as only 16 I paid. Jesus I may as well have took the twenty quid outside and burnt it. Looked no different, was literally a snippet off and he has to keep moving it out of his eyes. He thinks it cool despite older sibling saying it looks ridiculous. But we live in hope that he grows out of it and stops growing this alpaca head.

Pericombobulations · 15/06/2026 08:16

My 20 something also has a mullet and moustache for several years. I cant stand mullets but have just smiled and let him get on with it. Yes please to them going out of fashion!

BulbousNose · 15/06/2026 08:19

I think interfering in how your adult children look and dress is cringeworthy.

Yes, if you actually mention it to them or try and control them.

Sniggering about our children now wearing a hairstyle that was social death when we were kids is totally harmless 🙄.

Nincompoo · 15/06/2026 08:22

No, I love it! Especially the moustache which really suits him 🥸

Happyholidays78 · 15/06/2026 08:24

I'm with you! It's a terrible look or am I old fashioned? My son (18) has a moustache & hair like an Alpaca! Thankfully no mullet. I much prefer the clean shaven & short, tidy hair look BUT as everyone said they are experimenting.

HoraceCope · 15/06/2026 08:28

they are both ridiculous imo
i was shocked when i saw someone with a mullet recently.

Dollymylove · 15/06/2026 08:29

Fashions come and go. I personally dont like taches but dont mind a neatly trimmed beard.
In my opinion nothing can ever beat the original 80s mullet. Everyone had one, male and female. I had a spectacular one which I would post a picture of but I dont want to out myself 😆
God bless the 80s I wish I was back there now 😇

HoraceCope · 15/06/2026 08:31

i must admit in the 1980s my own hair was mullet style, like paul young

CharlotteStreetW1 · 15/06/2026 08:34

Well it makes a refreshing change from the ubiquitous man bun / hipster beard combo.

Branleuse · 15/06/2026 08:35

Mine don't, but I think they should all get it

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 15/06/2026 08:35

It's just fashion though, isn't it? I'm sure our mums must have had a moment or two when we insisted on going out with our tight perms and our pastel coloured stilettos back in the day.

I keep my mouth firmly closed. Mostly because otherwise I might fall about laughing at some of the stuff 'the yoof' are wearing. This too shall pass.

TheShoeLady · 15/06/2026 08:39

Mine both have mullets and moustaches! DS1 is even considering a hair transplant so that he can keep the mullet as his hair is thinning a bit and he can see it going the way of his dad who was bald in his 20s.

I think it’s great that they’re having fun with their hair and not just being all normie, but then I dye mine pink and have even shaved it off in the past so I’m not really that precious about hair.

They do look very 70s/80s but fashion is cyclical. I never would have thought I’d fancy a man with a beard as it reminded my of my dad in the 70s, but then DP has a beard and I can’t imagine him without it!

When my brother sees my sons he likes to say “118 118” but I’m not sure they get the reference!

MandyMotherOfBrian · 15/06/2026 08:41

Almost every single male friend of DDs at uni looks the same atm (including her boyfriend). Curly mullet, moustache. I’ve never been a fan but of course fashion comes around again and again - it does seem to have come round quite soon though. They all look like Harry Enfield’s Scousers 😁

user4903456342 · 15/06/2026 08:43

We just visited ours at uni (US). No moustache, but currently 'working' on the mullet. As with so many things about child rearing, I'm just waiting for it to pass.

Samewrinklesnewname · 15/06/2026 08:45

My 20 something son has a bit of a mullet going on -it really suits him as his hair’s quite wavy, fortunately no moustache though!

I think mullets are way better than the ‘bar code’ fringes which have been around for a while!

Alpaca head really made me laugh as the mum of a younger teen who also has an alpaca head!

lotstotalkthrough · 15/06/2026 08:57

I blame benson Boone. It’s all his fault 🤣

HoraceCope · 15/06/2026 09:06

although according to google paul mescal has a mullet which to me is hardly noticeable
