Double sided sticky tape – help wanted

DanFmDorking · 14/06/2026 18:24

I always have a bad time using double sided sticky tape – I end up with sticky tape in the wrong place, on my hands and me in a bad move.
Taking the second backing strip off always confounds me.
Is there a knack / a very easy way of taking the second backing off?
Are sticky dots the answer?
Is there something else I should use?
HELP!

Have a look on YouTube . . . some very good demos there

What are you using it for?

Sticking signs on a table

Get a piece of ordinary sellotape and make it into a ring, sticky all round on the outside. Put it on one thing you're sticking and press the other thing on to the sticky bit still showing.

You’re not trying to take the backing tape off before sticking it down are you? Sorry if this is stating the obvious, but stick the tape, sticky side down and backing paper on, to eg the back of the sign. Then peel off the backing tape and stick the sign to the table.

@BookishBobby - Thanks - I've ordered some different double sided tape - I'll be trying that.

@upinaballoon - I might end up doing that.

@TallagallaPenguin - Yes, I'm doing what you suggest - it's the 'peeling off the backing tape' that defeats me - I can't get hold of 'just the backing tape' - I end up pulling the stick glue off as well or tearing the paper.

It drives me bonkers.

Are your nails too short?

I usually get my nail in between the sticky part and the backing paper. I use the nail to separate them rather than fingers if you see what I mean. Then grab the backing part and pull once a little edge is separated.

It’s tricky sometimes but usually that method works okay for me.

Ok you cut the tape and before sticking it onto surface number 1 you press one corner back onto the sticky tape ie tape touching tape. Then when you peel back the cover layer you start from this same corner.

Get some museum gel!

If its for temporary sticking signs on a table, have a go at command strips. I swear by them!

deeahgwitch · 15/06/2026 19:17

I use Scotch 3M double sided tape. It doesn’t have backing.

@CharlotteSometimes1 - ... press one corner back onto the sticky tape ...
F**king ace!! - brilliant - it works - I've done it four times - it worked every time - why didn't I think of that?

(ahem) Thank you

@CharlotteSometimes1 - Thank you again - because of you, the flags stayed stuck to the table - the white 'trophy mats' stayed stuck to the flags - and various other things in the Raffle (out of picture on the left) stayed where they should be.

Three people said, 'Gosh Dan, that's a good way to use double sided sticky tape' - I'm afraid I just took the complement and didn't mention you - oh well, at least I passed it on.

Best wishes - Dan
