The best opening scene in a film ever?

I’ve just watched the opening scene to Spike Lee’s film Do the Right Thing. It was so mesmerising at the time on the big screen and unexpected (over 30 years ago now) - Rosie Perez was great and Fight the Power was an awesome track. I put it on top volume.

Whats your favourite opening scene?

Yes came here to say this

Never has the sheer horror and brutality of war been portrayed so well

See also band of brothers (though made by same people so no surprise really)

I love the openings of James Bond films.

TheJokersCard08 · 11/06/2026 19:09

Dawn of the Dead 2004.

Star Wars Ep IV.

Is that the one where it’s dark and then you see the lightsaber and Darth Vadar appears . Yes I agree with you

Saving Private Ryan

The bit at the graveyard?

The DDAY landing scene is one of the greatest in cinema, but it's not the opening scene of SPR.

True actually. But the graveyard bit is forgettable as is the rest of the film really.

Star Wars Ep IV.

I watched that on the ‘wide screen’ at the cinema when it first came out, it was jaw dropping.

The Life of Pi.
Computer graphics as they should be.

I had 3yo DD on my knee and she was spellbound.

Do the right thing is such a great film, just talking with DH about it the other day and saying we should rewatch during the next heat wave.

Apocalypse Now!

Overtheatlantic · 11/06/2026 19:39

Saving Private Ryan

ohhh god that opening is horrifying….but great movie!

Lemonmeringue76 · 11/06/2026 19:40

The Dark Knight

FeelingALittleWoozyHere · 11/06/2026 19:47

Ghost Ship 🤣

PotatoPrometheus · 11/06/2026 19:50

I’d add in some Kubrick too with 2001: A space odyssey and the Shining.

A fun one I always love is the opening to Rocky Horror with the lips! 👄

And a real low-brow one, XXX, a wonderfully terrible film, with a great performance from Rammstein to open…probably the best part of the film tbh 🔥

Marriedatsecondsight · 11/06/2026 19:54

Three days of the Condor

Robert Redford leaves his office to get coffee and finds all his colleagues dead on return

Brilliant movie

Carrie

I think the opening scene to Baby Driver is really good.

Bellbottoms!

Brilliant film.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 11/06/2026 20:10

Hard to beat the opening of Baz Lurhmann’s Romeo + Juliet.

SwirlyGates · 11/06/2026 20:13

There are many of these that I haven't seen, but I'll throw in Gangs of New York, with a terrifying Daniel Day-Lewis.

Up!

Oh yes that did make me cry a lot

guinnessguzzler · 11/06/2026 20:18

Possibly a bit of stretch for an opening but The Wizard of Oz when Dorothy steps out into (spoiler alert 😂) technicolour for the first time. It must have been genuinely breathtaking when it was first released.

CamilleBeauchamp · 11/06/2026 20:19

The Blues Brothers.

Ghostbusters.
