The best opening scene in a film ever?

I’ve just watched the opening scene to Spike Lee’s film Do the Right Thing. It was so mesmerising at the time on the big screen and unexpected (over 30 years ago now) - Rosie Perez was great and Fight the Power was an awesome track. I put it on top volume.

Whats your favourite opening scene?

I still jump at the opening of All The President’s Men even though I know what’s coming and have seen it 100 times. It says so much in a few seconds. But then I think the entire film is perfect in every frame.

Any of you fucking pricks move and I’ll execute every mother fucking last one of ya

Bond films do good openers

The one where he’s being chased on skis, goes off the cliff and then a Union Jack parachute opens is the most memorable imo. (As in it’s the only one I can remember at the moment though they’re usually fun)

It's absolutely one of the best films of all time.

Even the typeface they used for the opening credits is perfect.

The book is also brilliant.

Oh God, that Cliffhanger opening traumatised me when I saw it as a child Shock It’s a great movie though!

Pallisers · 11/06/2026 18:03

Another vote for Cliffhanger. The thing is you completely don't expect it Whereas in Jaws you know from the start (and the title) that a shark is going to eat someone.

The opening scene of Once Upon a Time in The West takes some beating

“Looks like we’re shy one horse”

”You brought two too many”

Superscared · 11/06/2026 18:06

Ghost Ship

Sound of Music obviously! Can't beat a bit of Julie Andrews singing on a mountain top ❤️

Up!

I was coming to say Up as well as the beginning was beautiful.

CraftandGlamour · 11/06/2026 18:12

There are so many great opening scenes mentioned already but my favourite opening scene - to take your question literally - has got to be Serenity because it introduces all the characters in one very technically complicated take.

Love that film. The ending is the best in a film ever.

Gilltthepill · 11/06/2026 18:17

Looking forward to watching some of these later. Yes, Pulp Fiction opener and Trainspotting also great. I think it’s a combination of something unexpected happening and the music.

Another vote for 28 weeks later. The tension in the opening scene is incredible

I’m with Upstart on 28 weeks later. That running scene ….
