The best opening scene in a film ever?

I’ve just watched the opening scene to Spike Lee’s film Do the Right Thing. It was so mesmerising at the time on the big screen and unexpected (over 30 years ago now) - Rosie Perez was great and Fight the Power was an awesome track. I put it on top volume.

Whats your favourite opening scene?

Since Sound of Music has already been suggested, I am going to go for Apocalypse Now.

I’m with Upstart on 28 weeks later. That running scene ….

I also vote for 28 days later. It was quite sort of ground breaking at the time. They filmed it very early morning in London to ensure the streets were empty. The scene with the Vicar popping his head up in the church was excellent.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind

The discovery of the WWII planes in the desert 50 years after they'd disappeared.

'' He said ' the sun came out last night'. ''

I was stoked at age 10 seeing that first scene. The rest of the film did not disappoint

Saving Private Ryan
Cliffhanger

Trainspotting was brilliant, especially for the time.

Saving Private Ryan opening is haunting and has stayed with me.

Agree UP always gives me a lump in the throat. Beautifully done with no words.

I will add Bladerunner.

Oh god yes! Such brilliant acting.

Saving Private Ryan - apparently the World War II veterans who saw it said it captured what it was like to a T being part of the d-day landings

Commando.

Arnie carrying the giant log and chainsaw both at once, then showing the softer side with his daughter and ice cream.

My husband wrote his uni dissertation on it and how accurate it was. (It was, very).

I'm still traumatised by the opening of Ghost Ship after about 20 years - I was eating a chicken Kiev at the time and haven't quite been able to stomach one since!

SinisterBumFacedCat · Yesterday 18:43

Scream. Killing off Drew Barrymore in the first 5 minutes when she was probably one of the biggest names in the movie was so cocky.

Also 28 Days Later, the deserted daytime London is so haunting.

Another vote for 28 weeks later. The tension in the opening scene is incredible

Edited

I now need to watch this.

I'm not really into zombie films, but I watched the first installment of 28 Years Later and thought the start of that was really hard hitting with the children!

Four Weddings and a Funeral. FUCK!

Came here to say this!

“It better not be the B359”
It’s the B359
“FUCK IT!”

ithinkilikethislittlelife · Yesterday 18:50

The start of John Wick and Nobody are cracking starts to films and if I catch the start of either I always end up watching them all.
Saw Up in the cinema when it first came out and bloody sobbed. I can’t watch the start of it now, I busy myself til it gets going proper.

That was my choice, too!

There are so many great opening scenes mentioned already but my favourite opening scene - to take your question literally - has got to be Serenity because it introduces all the characters in one very technically complicated take.

Yes it’s a masterclass in filmmaking.
